High quality early type (i.e. pre-War and pre 1951'ish) Pilot Needle to fit original Amal TT and RN carburettors.  These tapered needles control the slow running and are often worn on originals.

This is the rare to find early design which was fitted up until approximately 1951, it having a distincvitve design with a shorter knurl than the later type. As far as we are aware - this type of needle have not been available since they were last manufactured by Amal in the early 1950's, and virtually every original example I have seen looks very worn and tired - normally with the original knurl chewed and the needle point worn or bent.

Price is Each

These Pilot Needles were fitted to all Amal TT and RN competition carburettors, to adjust slow running.  They have a stepped, tapered needle that should close fully the small pilot hole in the body of the carubrettor needle, when fully screwed clockwise.  Original needles most often have some form of wear to the taper of the needle, and as this type of carburettor is already difficult to adjust to run cleanly at low throttle settings - a worn needle will easily compound those issues.

We manufacture these needles to the original design, and an original early type Amal TT needle was used as the template (the needle length is different to the later Long Knurl design (that we also offer - see Item 0154).  The main knurled body has the same dimensions as the original, and most importantly - the needle length protrudes into the carb the same as the original needle.

The body type on this pilot needle is CNC manufactured from brass, as per the original Amal items, then Satin Nickel plated.  It has a fine knurl, and a distinctive stepped shape that makes it easily identifiable from the later design.  If you are restoring an early competition model or SOHC Norton, then fitting this type of Pilot Needle gives that extra level of authenticity.  I am not exactly sure the date that the design was changed to the later type - but believe it was approximately 1951 - All TT or RN carbs before that time would have been fitted with this type of Pilot Needle.  Factory pictures of the Amal TT with larger type 302 Floatchamber still showed this needle type fitted - meaning it could have been used later than 1951

Note, we also offer the later 'Long Knurl' type TT/RN Pilot Needle - Item 0154 as well as the longer needle type to fit later Amal GP carburettors - item 0293.

these pilot adjusters control the slow running, and the needle often wears on originals, that can affect the adjustment available - fitting a new needle will help resolve this.  Note - we also offer the brass pilot housing that screws into the carb body as well as both springs fitted to this adjuster - the internal coil spring as well as the external leaf spring - Items 0155, 0156 and 0157 respectively, all UK manufactured.

Pilot Needle Assembly With Springs:  It is rare to find an origina Amal TT or RN carburettor these days that is still fitted with the correct and full Pilot Needle Assembly.  Originally the design consisteed of a brass threaded piece that screwed into the carb body, which had a special black stained spring clip mounted behind it.  The purpose of this spring clip was to act against the knurl of the Pilot Needle (both the early short type and the later long knurl type), and stop it rotating once set.  Often these seemed to have been removed (they can sometimes make adjustement more fiddly - but are required!), or got rusty and broke.  We can also supply these - Our Item 0157.

However, the original Pilot Needle assembly was also designed to have a small coil spring fitted inside the brass threaded piece, which fitted around the shaft of the Pilot Needle, and helped apply some positive pressure to the needle when adjusting it.  These are frequuently lost or omitted on TT and RN carbs today.  Again we supply this spring - Our Item 0156.  Both springs are copied directly from original examples.

Early Amal TT (and Amac??) Needles? - Very early Amal TT carbs (i.e. pre-1930) have lots of minor diffences to the later carbs.  I cannot be sure as I no longer own an early carb (I let a TT27 Norton carb go years ago and have regretted it since!) . . . but I think the pilot needle may have been slightly shorter than the 'standard' TT/RN pilot needle.  If you have an early carb and would like to check, please email us at sales@racingvincent.co.uk, as I have a few pilot needles made with a fractionally shorter needle.

High quality Pilot Needle to fit original Amal TT and RN carburettors.  These tapered needles control the slow running and are often worn on originals. This is the later type most often seen fitted from late 1940s onwards - identifiable by a long knurl and screwdriver slot. See listing for more detail.

We manufacture these needles to the original design, and an original Amal TT needle was used as the template.  The main knurled body has the same dimensions as the original, and most importantly - the needle length protrudes into the carb the same as the original needle.

The body type on this pilot needle is CNC manufactured from brass, as per the original Amal items, then Satin Nickel plated.  It has a fine knurl, as well as a screwdriver slot, allowing for fine adjustment, either by hand, or by screwdriver.  Note - this design was the later Amal TT/RN design for this type of carburettor - I cannot be sure, but believe it replaced the earlier dessign sometime in the late 1940's.

Update 2022:  Note, we can now also offer the earlier 'small design' pilot needle, which to our knowledge has not been available since Amal themselves changed the design in the late 1940's, this earlier design was fitted on all pre-war carbs - see our Item 1115

We also offer the longer needle type to fit later Amal GP carburettors - item 0293.

these pilot adjusters control the slow running, and the needle often wears on originals, that can affect the adjustment available - fitting a new needle will help resolve this.  Note - we also offer the brass pilot housing that screws into the carb body as well as both springs fitted to this adjuster - the internal coil spring as well as the external leaf spring - Items 0155, 0156 and 0157 respectively, all UK manufactured.

TT/RN Carb - Brass Pilot Needle Insert

Product no.: 0155 TT/2966

In stock
can be shipped within 15 days

£18.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- Brass pilot needle insert to fit in both original Amal TT, RN and GP competition carbs (all types) - these screw into the carburettor body, then the Pilot Adjuster Needle Screw screws into this brass insert.

Price is each.

These are used to hold and allow adjustment of the Pilot Adjuster Needles (our Items 0154 or 1115 for the Amal TT or RN type carbs, or Item 0293 for GP Carbs).  They screw into the main body of the carburettor on a small coarse thread, but then have a very fine thread on their outer diameter, that allows for very fine adjustment.

They have a small slotted (milled) end, that allows a wide screwdriver to screw to screw them into the carb body - however, it is not unusual for the very fine thread to get damaged over the years, or people try and unscrew them with a screwdriver that is not wide enough, and only makes contact with the slot on one side - almost always damaging the very fine thread.  If this occurs, the consequence is normally that the Pilot Adjuster will not turn easily, or even lock up completely - making it useless.

Therefore when fitting or removing this item from your carb body - always use the correct screwdriver tool - I often get a scrap piece of flat steel plate just thick enough to fit in the slot but wide enough to make contact on both sides - also lightly grease thread for best results.

By the way - there was normally a small coil spring fitted into the recess of this insert (our Item 0156), but you will often find this missing - it is better for it to be fitted.  Additionally there was a leaf spring (that made contact with the knurl on the Pilot Adjuster - Our Item 0157), they should also be fitted and fit on the back shoulder of the brass insert.

Air Adjuster Spring or Early Type Throttle Spring to fit Original Amal TT/RN carbs (Each)

Product no.: 0850 TT Spring

£3.80
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the spring of the correct dimensions to fit the Amal TT/RN/GP air adjuster assembly.  However, It is also of the type shown fitted to earlier Amal TT and RN carburettors, before the introduction of conical springs on competition carburettors.

These are high quality UK manufactured (plated) springs, of similar strength to originals.  We use them in our Air Adjuster kits.

Price is Each

Earlier TT and RN Carburettor Background:

As well as being of the type fitted to the competition air assembly - this type of spring were also of the type that were found fitted to Amal TT and RN carburettors before the introduction of the more commonly found conical spring (which we sell - Item 0144).  They fit neatly in the recess at the top of the TT/RN carb top, where the original type cable adjuster fitted - this being a slightly larger hole than later TT/RN/GP carbs, which had a smaller adjuster and used the later conical spring.

Another give away if you are not sure which type of spring your original TT/RN throttle slide would have been fitted with - the top of the earlier throttle slides also had a small recess in the top of the cable holder area, to fit the spring - and as you can see in the accompanyning photograph - our springs fit exactly in that rececss (the photograph shows an original early RN slide).  Later slides had a slight recess around the top of the slide to fit the later conical spring (and all our replacement TT and RN slides have this recess for the conical spring).

However, it must be noted that although useful to use for this purpose - you must be comfortable yourself that you choose a spring (either conical or straight type like this item) that is of satisfactory strength to ensure the slide will close fully.  Different people have their own preference on throttle spring strength - some people do not like to have to exert a lot of effort to open the throttle - but it is important to adjust any throttle spring to ensure the throttle will close fully if you take your hand off the twistgrip.  In the past I have adjusted the length of the spring a small amount - to ensure that the throttle will easily close fully once I have let go of the twistgrip.

Note, some people prefer the conical throttle spring anyway, and retro fit those to the earlier carbs - personal choice, but always make sure they are fitted correctly and the throttle can close and open fully

RN Mixing Chamber Cap Ring to fit original Amal 10RN Carbs (chromed brass) - Each

Product no.: 1057 185/330

In stock

£32.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are lovely quality chromed chamber cap to fit all original 10RN (Remote Needle)  Amal Carburetters,  which were the carburettor type fitted to most competition/racing SOHC and early DOHC Norton's from the late 1930's through to the early 1950's.  Original Amal RN carbs are now very difficult to find spares for - and this is one of the parts specific to that carburettor type, and this ring is copied from an original pattern.

The RN top ring was of a slightly wider diameter than the more common Amal TT type (our Item no 0137), as well as being slightly less deep -as the top ring for this carb type also needed to retain the Remote Needle throttle needle cap and prayer book spring (which we can also supply - Item 0167), specific to the RN design.

They are CNC manufactured to the original pattern, with lovely crisp grooving (important not just for grip - but because many TT and RN carbs use the later type design bellmouth spring (our item 0139) which uses this grooving to stop the top ring rotating.

These are CNC manufactured for us in the UK from brass, and then polished and chromed to a high finish (also in the UK - by a company specialising in classic vehicle plating and polishing).  Note also that as part of the manufacturing process for these caps - the ring grooves are not knurled, but are individually grooved on a CNC mill, to ensure a crisp and accurate finish - which knurling would not achieve (and explains why not a cheap part to manufacture).  Some owners of early original Amal racing carbs will know that original knurling is often damaged and worn - resulting in the cap being difficult to remove.

The inner diameter of this ring is also slightly greater than the TT type - it being to fit the original Amal RN inner cap that had an inner spigot diameter of 1.062" (27.1mm)

Note November 2021:  Currently, we do not offer the original type Amal RN inner cap (i.e. with the 1.062" spigot, an original item is shown fitted in the accompanyning photos), but we will shortly be manufacturing a batch, similar to our TT type (Item 0138), but with the wider spigot.  Email us at sales@racingvincent.co.uk if you are missing this item.  Note also that the TT type 0138 will fit into the bore of an original RN10 carb - as the cap has a lip on its outer diameter that keeps it centralised .. . so can be used at a push if you do not have an original RN cap, and cannot wait for our RN type to be manufactured.

RN Needle Cap and Prayer Book Spring (sold as a pair)

Product no.: 0167 185/120+106

In stock

£17.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the distinctive Remote Needle Alloy Cap and 'Prayer Book' spring fitted to Amal RN Remote Needle carburettors - the two components listed as a matching pair.  Together, they fit over the Remote Needle part of the main body alloy casting of the main Amal RN body.  This listing is for both components.

We also sell the spring seperately, if you already have the cap - this is Item listing 0805.

The alloy cap is CNC manufactured by us from an original pattern, including the distinctive milled side - that allows it to fit snugly in the original RN casting

The spring holds the alloy cap in place to stop and stops it flying away in use, it is retained by the knurled top ring - as shown in the photograph of an original RN carburettor with the Cap/Spring fitted.

Sorry this assembly is not cheap - but as well as CNC setup costs, I have had a batch of this distinctive spring specially made from an original pattern, and they were very expensive.  I hope you will think them worth the cost - given they are a very rare part to find and almost always missing when you purchase an original Amal RN carburettor

10TT BellMouth - Short Length: To fit Amal 10TT Carburettors

Product no.: 0140a TT/BellS

In stock

from £35.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- 'Short' type bellmouth to fit original Amal 10TT carburettors .  High quality CNC machined from an original bellmouth pattern.  Available in various internal diameter's - including those to fit both 350 and 500 variation SOHC Nortons

These distinctive bellmouths are of the type originally fitted to Amal 10TT competition carburettors and were most commonly fitted to roadgoing Norton SOHC models as well as many other British competition and sports motorcycles throughout the 1930's - 50's.

These are CNC machined from an original bellmouth pattern and are available in various internal diameters from 1 3/32" (350 Norton International size) to 1 3/16" (the largest commonly available 10TT size, although in the past I have made a couple of up to 1 1/4"  which I believe was a special size occasionally made - I have fitted one of these to a methanol SOHC engine in the past).

Standard Norton International 500cc size was 1 5/32", although for earlier engines up to 1935 the size was 1 1/8".  We offer both these sizes.

SOHC Manx engines were normally fitted with Amal RN engines from the late 1930's.  Although I believe these were sometimes fitted with 'Short' bellmouths, it was more normal to see these fitted with 'Medium' length bellmouths.  As at 25/6/18 we have ran out of these medium length bellmouths, but expecting to have a batch available in the next 4 weeks - email us at normal 'Sales' email to reserve one

10TT/RN BellMouth - Medium Length: To fit Amal 10TT and RN Carburettors

Product no.: 0140b TT/BellM

In stock

from £36.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- 'Medium type bellmouth to fit original Amal 10TT and RN (Remote Needle) carburettors .  High quality CNC machined from an original bellmouth pattern (see photo) .  Available in various internal diameter's - including those to fit both 350 and 500 variation SOHC Nortons

These distinctive bellmouths are of the type originally fitted to Amal 10TT and RN competition carburettors and were the type often seen fitted to early SOHC 30M/40M SOHC (and early DOHC) Manx Norton's fitted with Amal RN carburettors throughout the 1930's - 50's.  They were also fitted to many other competition and GP bikes of the 1930's-1950's.

These bellmouths are CNC machined by us from an original bellmouth pattern.  The first photograph shows  a very original longnecked (as fitted to SOHC racing Norton's) Amal RN competition carburettor (still with original paint), fitted with one of our CNC machined bellmouths, and the original Amal RN bellmouth in front of it.  I hope you would agree - the profile and overall shape of our bellmouth is pretty much identical to the original  . . . while most other 'medium' length pattern bellmouths I have seen manufactured over the years have not been able to get this profile correct.

They are available in various internal diameters from 1 3/32" (350 Norton International size) to 1 3/16" (the largest commonly available 10TT size, although in the past I have made a couple of up to 1 1/4"  which I believe was a special size occasionally made - I have fitted one of these to a methanol SOHC engine in the past).

Standard Norton International 500cc size was 1 5/32", although for earlier engines up to 1935 the size was 1 1/8".  We offer both these sizes.

SOHC Manx engines were normally fitted with Amal RN engines from the late 1930's.  Although I believe these were sometimes fitted with 'Short' bellmouths (see Item 0140a), but it was more normal to see these fitted with 'Medium' length bellmouths.  However, I have also seen roadgoing models with Amal TT carburettors fitted with the longer 'Medium' length bellmouth - we do both, whichever is your personal preference.

These medium length bellmouths will also fit the later Amal 15GP or 10GP competition carburettor (but not 5GP or 3GP which are larger).  It is not unusual on later GP carburettors to see a slightly  more cone shaped  profile, rather than the type shown here for RN/TT type carbs, although this is only obvious when compared side by side

Final point:  I also offer a 'Custom Diameter' - which means if you have a particular diameter not listed, I may be able to machine this with some change to our program - but may have an additional cost, as i would need to set machine up for doing this task - email us on normal sales@racingvincent.co.uk
