Spare Red Fibre Washers for Norton SOHC Petrol Taps - Pair

Product no.: 0383 A11M/285-W

In stock

£2.30
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are the correct size Red Fibre washers, to fit the distinctive Norton SOHC sump type petrol taps. They fit on the top of the petrol tap bowl when screwing the tap into the petrol tap and are normally perished on original taps.

Price is for a pair (i.e for two petrol taps).

These are sourced from a top quality fibre washer manufacturer so are nice quality

(Note - Summer 2022:  I do sometimes manufacture batch's of the bowl type petrol taps - which are always in demand, but these are very time consuming to make . . . and currently am not getting time on CNC to make them.  If you are looking for original style taps - in the meantime, I may consider making a batch of the bowls, fitted with proprietary 1/4" BSP taps - which as a final assemble tap, would look almost identical . . . email sales@racingvincent.co.uk if interested)

Hex 'Push/Pull' Type 1/4" BSP Petrol Taps - as fitted to Most OHV/SV Norton Singles - Each

Product no.: 1114 1_4_BSPtap3

In stock

£39.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These Hex type 'Push/Pull' 1/4" BSP thread (into tank) and 1/4" BSP outlet thread petrol taps are of the same general design as fitted to most roadgoing Norton models from the 1930's-50's, i.e. SV, OHV, CS1 and Dominator models.  These particular reproduction fuel taps are CNC manufactured to a higher standard than most others we have seen - and include a gauze filter, and an additional BSP nut and ferrule (whcih means a copper pipe can be soldered in if required).

Price is per unit

They have an attractive knurl on the 'Push/Pull' buttons, as well as etched writing on the face of the knurled buttons.  The quality of the gauze is very fine and the overall finish of the petrol tap is very good, when compared to other patterns we have seen over the years.

This type of push/pull petrol tap was normal fitment on most Norton roadgoing singles from the 1930's to the 1950's, and they have the correct 1/4" BSP outlet thread - so will fit our period black rubber (ethanol proof) petrol pipe sets as well - Items 0121/0122.

When fitted pre-war - on some models a copper pipe was fitted instead of black rubber pipes - see the left side of the picture taken from the 1937-38 WD16H Spare Parts Catalog to see what one of these original pipe designs looked like - these petrol taps come with an additional 1/4" BSP nut, and a ferrule that lends itself to being bored to fit copper pipe, that can be soft soldered to this ferrule.  (Note: in my own collection, I have an original 1930's twin pipe similar to this - I may consider making a batch of these twin copper/nickel plated fuel pipe assemblies at some time in the future - email on sales@racingvincent.co.uk if interested).

Note - Dowty or fibre washers for sealing to the petrol tank are sold seperately and not included with the taps.

!930's-1950's Lever Type 1/4" BSP Petrol Tap - With Filter. Nickel Finish - Each

Product no.: 1180 1_4_BSPtap4

In stock

£39.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These 1/4" BSP x 1/4" BSP Nickel finish 'Lever Type' taps are of the style commonly fitted to competition bikes in period - and in fact, I think this  style were original fitment on later (1950 onwards?) Manx models.  These are nice quality CNC manufactured reproductions of that original design and come fitted with a gauze fliter.  They are finished in a nice quality nickel plated finish and look very good value for money.

Note:  Unlike original lever taps - which were normally manufactured with a 'taper' pin for the lever mechanism, these modern type taps are fitted with a unique 'ball valve insert' - which the mannufacturers say are far less likely to leak than the older mechanism, and are resistent against the current modern high ethanol fuels.

Note for anyone considering boring these out for Alchohol/methanol fuels (which is something I used to sometimes use the original lever type taps for - sorry . . . but as these modern taps use a ball valve, rather than a tapered pin - they cannot be bored out to a larger bore - so are not advisable for methanol or alchohol fuels!! (just in case there is anyone out there still using Methanol!),

Price is each

This style of petrol tap can be used on normal roadgoing models if you prefer them to the original fitement 'Hex Push/Pull type (our Item 1114) - but in period I believe this style of 'lever' type petrol tanks were fitted to Manx Norton petrol tanks (with the introduction of the Gardengate alloy Manx tank in 1950 -  I have a genuine tank of that year, and it has 1/4" BSP thread for this type of tank.  Earlier Manx tanks used the larger bowl Norton taps - our item 0375).  These are a very nice copy of that style of tap, but use a modern lever mechanism instead of the original 'tapered pin', which was prone to leaking once worn.

Note - Dowty or fibre washers for sealing to the petrol tank are sold seperately and not included with the taps.

- Modern equivelant Dowty washer (outer washer is zinc plated steel, inner washer is neoprene). This washer is used behind the timing chamber filter bolt and also at the back of the rear cylinder crankcase mouth bolt (that has an oil feed).

It can also be used behind 1/4 BSP fittings - but I prefer to use copper or red fibre on those applications, as they look more original

Copper Crush Washers to fit OHV/SV/CS1 Oil Tank Main Union 1930's-50's - Per Pair

Product no.: 1118 A2/293

In stock

£3.20
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This item listing is for a pair of copper 'Crush' washers of the type that were fitted behind the distinctive Oil Tank Union as fitted to most Roadgoing Norton models - i.e OHV, Side Valve and CS1 (not Inter tanks) from the 1930's through to the 1950's.  See listing for more detail.

Price is per pair - so as well as the one fitted, you have another as a spare.

The 1948 Norton Spare Parts List describes this Copper Crush Washer as part A2/293 - and in the accompanyning pictures I have shown a picture of the 1948 Oil Tank with washer shown.  This particular type of oil tank had the main (brass casting) Oil Tank Union exiteing the oil tank at approximately 90 degrees (i.e. horizontal) - so that it could avoid fouling the 'Upright' type gearbox that was fitted all the way through the 1930's to approximately 1950 - so these washers should fit all pre-war and Post war upright gearbox oil tanks with this type of union casting.

However, when the 'Laydown' gearbox was introduced in approximately 1950-51, the oil tank union shape was changed, and exited the oil tank at approximately 45 degrees (as there was no longer an issue with clearance around the gearbox) - but the actual threaded area of that later union type was the same as the earlier design - and these crushable copper washers will also fit the various designs used through road models to the Late 1950's.

Although this type of washer were not used on 'Semi Wrapround' or 'Full Wrapround Racing' oil tanks on SOHC Inter/Manx models, I believe they were of the type fitted to most Featherbed Inter and Featherbed DOHC Manx fittings. Email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk if you require more fitting information for your own model.

I cannot be sure if these will fit all early 1930's tanks - particularly the type that had a dial tap fitted.  If you have one of these type unions - please email us first - even if your union has a smaller diameter than these - we may be able to obtain smaller sizes.

These are good quaity Crushable Washer from one of our specialist UK washer manufacturers.  Price is per pair of washers

Footnote:  These crushable washers commonly used to be called 'Copper/Abestos washers' - as the filling used to be abestos (in the days when fitted to Norton models in period).  However - Abestos has been outlawed for many years and this washer type is now filled with a soft mineral filling.

Black Rubber Petrol Pipes with Unions - Per Pair

Product no.: 0121 A11/283

In stock

£36.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- High quality fuel pipes (modern fuel/emission quality 1/4" pipe - fully Ethanol proof) to give that original black rubber finish of period fuel pipes.

They have all writing removed and are made up with nice quality plated 1/4" BSP unions and crimped ferrules, to give a professional, period finish.

These standard length pipes are of approximately 10" and 10.5" actual pipe length, which gives enough length for nice graceful curves and to fit all the various Norton International and Manx style tanks fitted wth Amal TT/RN or GP carbs.

These pipe sets can also be used with other Norton road models fitted wtih an Amal (or other make of carburettor) - fitted with twin 1/4" BSP banjo fittings.  And of course - the same applies to other marques of motorcycles fitted with Amal carburettors.  However, you might want to check that the lengths stated above are best suited for your bike - we also sell a slightly shorter length of pipes (Item 0122) - or you can email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk if you want to request a custom length - and we can quote pro-rata (allow up to 3 weeks for custom lengths though.

We use high quality Ethanol proof black rubber style fuel line when making these sets up, and ensure all writing is removed from the pipes - so they give a vintage bike restoration a period finish

Update Oct 2023 Now back in stock - But like everything else, post Covid the cost of these UK manufactured fittings and ethanol proof pipe have risen considerably in the last 18 months - hence the price increase (but which is still less than the % component increase)

Short Black Rubber Petrol Pipes with Unions - Per Pair

- High quality fuel pipes (modern fuel/emission quality 1/4" pipe- fully Ethanol proof) to give that original black rubber finish of period fuel pipes. They have all writing removed and are made up with B.S.P. unions and crimped ferrules, to give a professional finish. - These shorter length pipes are of approx 8.5" and 9" actual pipe length, which should still be enough for most petrol tanks, but can be fitted if you prefer smaller loops with little excess showing. I would suggest getting an old piece of tubing and cutting to this size as a test first if you are unsure.

These slightly shorter length pipes are of approximately 8.5" and 9.0" actual pipe length, which are slightly shorter than our Item 0121 fuel pipe sets - but some people prefer a more direct pipe - and they are also more similar to some road going models fitted with Amal 276 or Monoblock carbs.  If you are not sure what length would suit your bike best - just get a length of thick wire and gently bend it to the correct curve between your petrol tank and carb . . . and then measure that.

These pipe sets can also be used with other Norton road models fitted wtih an Amal (or other make of carburettor) - fitted with twin 1/4" BSP banjo fittings.  And of course - the same applies to other marques of motorcycles fitted with Amal carburettors.  However, you might want to check that the lengths stated above are best suited for your bike - we also sell a slightly longer length of pipes (Item 0121) - or you can email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk if you want to request a custom length - and we can quote pro-rata (allow up to 3 weeks for custom lengths though.

Stainless Steel Oil/Fuel Pipe End Ferrule - 5/16" ID BSP Pipe Size (14mm OD Pipe) - Each

Product no.: 0979a Ferrule2

In stock

£2.40
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This item is a stainless steel oil/fuel pipe ferrule to fit black rubber style 5/16" internal diameter BSP pipe - of the type often used on Norton models for cambox pipes, breather pipes or similar - but this type will fit over pipe with an OD of 14mm

These are UK manufactured by a specialist ferrule maker.

Although 5/16" internal pipe bore is a standard BSP pipe size, it should be noted that many commercial fuel and oil breather pipes have different outer diameters - and therefore some ferrules will fit and others will not.  This particular ferrule is a good quality UK manufatured ferrule with an internal bore of 0.544"/13.8mm - meaning it will fit over fuel/oil pipes with an outer diameter of 14mm.  Notw we also manufacture ourselves a slightly bigger 5/16" ferrule, which will fit over pipes with an outer diameter up to 15mm - see Item 0979b (but they are CNC turned from solid stainless bar and far more expensive).

Price is Each.

These ferrules can be crimped with a commercially available ferrule crimping tool - but often on breather pipes, all that is necessary (if the ferrule is a firm fit over the pipe, and is mainly to be cosmetic only) is to use a centre punch half way along the length of the ferrule to stop it slipping off.  If you are using it for fuel - as with all fuel pipes - it will require some form of crimping tool to ensu

Stainless Steel Oil/Fuel Pipe End Ferrule - 5/16" BSP Pipe (Bar Turned 15mm OD Pipe) Size - Each

Product no.: 0979b Ferrule3

£3.90
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This item is a stainless steel oil/fuel pipe ferrule to fit black rubber style 5/16" BSP pipe - of the type often used on Norton models for cambox pipes, breather pipes or similar.  These are CNC machined from solid stainless bar - to fit over a fuel/oil pipe of up to 15mm OD, as chrome ferThese are CNC machined from solid stainless bar, as chrome ferrules in this size are not easily obtainable.

It should be noted that although 5/16" BSP pipe is a common BSP bore size - the outer diameter of this bore size pipe can vary considerably, and although we sell commercial pipe ferrules that will fit over 5/16" bore pipe with an OD of up to 14mm (Item 0979a), some 5/16" pipe (particularly the black rubber type) can have a bigger outer diameter - therefore we sometimes make small batches of these ferrules - which have an internal bore of 0.599" and can be firmly pushed over fuel/oil pipes of up to 15mm.

We already sell black rubber petrol pipe sets (Items 0121 and 0122), which use nice quality chromed steel 1/4 BSP ferrules to crimp the fuel pipes to the union connectors - however, similar looking (i.e.classic motorcycle type) ferrules for the larger 5/16" BSP style pipe have been unobtainable commercially for many years (to my knowledge) - so for one of my own projects, having not been able to find any suitable commercially available ferrules - I ended up writing the CNC programs to machine these from solid bar stock stainless steel.

The finished job is a very pretty thin walled ferrule, where the final gauge of the steel that covers the 5/16" pipe is comparable to normal chromed steel (1/4 BSP) ferrules.  The internal bore of these ferrules is 0.599"/15.2mm which should be an easy slide fit on most 5/16" bore BSP fuel/oil pipe, but please check before ordering - as the outside diameter of fuel pipes can vary by brand and type (the nominal size referring to the internal bore).

The ferrules are shouldered at one end (as most pipe ferrules are) and have a very pretty, non-rusting finish.

You will need to decide for yourself how you attach them - there are various commercial crimping tools available, as for all ferrules - but again, if using motorcycle type crimping clamps intended for 1/4 BSP, you will need to satisfy yourself they will fit over these ferrules which have an external diameter of 0.620"/15.8mm,  If these are just being used for cosmetic purposes (i.e. on a breather or oil pipe that is already a tight fit over the copper oil pipe the pipe is fitted to) - it is possible to just use some form of silicone sealer to hold it in place and then to centre punch the thin walled ferrule where it will not be visible at the rear, to hold it in place to the rubber pipe.

These are far more expensive that commercially available chrome steel ferrules in other sizes - because of the effort and material required to CNC machine them from solid 0.625" round bar stock . . . but add a nice cosmetic touch if you want to fit period black rubber oil or breather pipes - and want to cover twisted lockwire (whcih is the normal method I use for sealing/securing 5/16" bore pipes) or dont like using modern style non-period connectors, which never seem to look right on a classic restoration
