Six Hole 'Finned Type' Rear Hub/Sprocket for all Plunger Frame Models - Each

Product no.: 0296b B4/463

In stock

£180.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a very good, English made, example of the rear sprocket/hub that was fitted to all SOHC and OHV Nortons with Plunger frames, identifiable from rigid framed models as having a different mounting and fins around the drum.

This distinctive sprocket/hub is easily distinguishable from the Rigid/Swinging arm type sprocket, as it has cooling fins around the brake hub and has 6 holes - as the plunger hub has 3 studs and 3 locating pins (the rigid hub does not have holes - it has 3 closely mounted studs instead - see Item 0296 for this item).

This sprocket type has been extremely difficult to find for many years, so I am very pleased to be able to offer such a nice example It should be noted that this type of rear sprocket was also used with plunger Overhead Valve bikes fitted with plunger frames.

The sprocket is to take a 5/8" x 1/4" chain, as per the original

Norton 30M (SOHC Manx) 21" Steel Racing Front Mudguard

Product no.: 0306 A11M/529S

In stock

£79.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Steel narrow front racing/sports mudguard - of type originally fitted  to Norton SOHC Manx style racing mudguard - 3 7/8" wide, correct radius for 3.00 x 21" front tyres.

I have these steel front mudguards specially made, which have the correct radius for use with 21" rims, using 3.00 x 21" tyres (Avon Speedmaster or similar) - These mudguards are 3 and 7/8" width with a 14.5" radius (taken from the wheel spindle centre to the top of the 'C' section, and are 33.5" in length - They are the ideal mudguard for fitting to Racing Internationals and SOHC Manx models, having that slim sporting look. I would advise fitting a strengthening rib of steel (approx 1" wide) on their underside if using the correct rear stand, to strengthen them. Norton's even did this with their steel items pre-war - Sorry these are not cheap, but I searched everywhere to find this profile and could not - so now I have small batch's specially manufactured for RacingVincent (normal 21" mudguards are to fit trials bikes and do not look right at all).

Note: as always post these mudguards seperately from the main order (to protect from damage). Packing is normally a bit extra from a normal order because of the amount of bubble wrap required + the Royal Mail postage amount which we will confirm to you before payment

Update November 2023: I am sorry to say that we will no longer be able to offer these mudguards to customers outside of the UK:  we apologise this is the case - but despite how well we package them - unscrupulous mailing and courier services still seem to find a way to damage them in transit - and then do everything they can to avoid us raising a claim - leaving us with a total loss and huge amount of wasted time trying to chase them.  Sorry - but if you are visiting the UK, or have a friend in the UK to deliver to - then email us before ordering - we will help if we can.  Best wishes Paul

Norton 30M (SOHC Manx) 19/20" Steel Racing Rear Mudguard

Product no.: 0307 A11M/534

In stock

£89.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Steel narrow rear racing/sports mudguard - of type originally fitted  to Norton SOHC Manx style racing mudguard - 4 1/4" wide, correct radius for 4.25 x 19" or 20" rear tyres, specially made for RacingVincent

These narrow rear sports/racing mudguards are 'C' section, of 4 1/4" width and should be considered a matching item to the steel front sport/racing mudguard shown here - A11/531.

These rear mudguards have a 15" radius (taken from the wheel spindle centre to the top of the 'C' section), which makes them suitable for 19" rear tyres such as Avon GP or Roadrunners. I have also matched them up to a 20" rear tyre, as used originally on Norton Internationals, and they also look suitable for this tyre form. We also have them made longer than most rear mudguards, so they can be cut to your length - in case you want them with a longer drop at the rear as some older racing or grasstrack bikes had.

They are the ideal mudguard for fitting to Racing Internationals and SOHC Manx models, and I used the mudguard from one of my own racing Norton's as a pattern to have these made. They are made 55" long - a long length, so they can be cut to your own length.  At this length it gives you the option to either have them on a roadgoing International - with a longer drop so a number plate and light can be fitted, or shortened slightly for racing version as used on M30 and Manx models.  Look at photos of my Racing International or Big Plunger Manx  on www.racingvincent.co.uk to see ideal length when using A11M grab handle.

When looking for this style of mudguard about 8 years ago I could not find any good ones anywhere - so ended up having these and the corresponding sports/racing font mudguard made specially for RacingVincent by a specialist mudguard manufacturer, since then they have proved to be two of our most popular items.

- We always post these mudguards seperately from the main order (to protect from damage). Packing is normally a bit extra from a normal order because we either have to buy the big boxes and/or extra amount of bubble wrap required, and the Royal Mail postage amount which we will confirm to you before payment.

March 2017: Back in stock again, but the inevitable price rise from my manufacturer (my margin as before)

Vincent/Norton 30M 21" Alloy Racing Front Mudguard

Product no.: 0305F A11M/529A

In stock

£85.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- Alloy mudguards with the correct radius for use with 21" rims, using 3.00 x 21" tyres (Avon Speedmaster or similar) - These mudguards are 3 and 7/8" width with a 14.5" radius (taken from the wheel spindle centre to the top of the 'C' section - They are the ideal mudguard for fitting to Vincent Competition Models or Racing Internationals and SOHC Manx models

However, if you are going to paint these black, and not worried about the marginal weight saving - I personally would recommend going for the steel version of this mudguard we also sell (item 0306), as they are more durable and do not dent as easily.

If you do fit them to a Norton competition bike - I would advise fitting a strengthening rib of steel (approx 1" wide) on their underside if using the correct rear stand, to strengthen them. Norton's even did this with their steel items pre-war.

They are also ideal if you are building a Vincent competition model with original 21" front racing wheel - i.e. Vincent Grey Flash or Vincent Black Lightning.  I have fitted the same mudguard to my own Black Lightning Replica - see photo attached.

- Final point - we will always pack mudguards in special heavyweight boxes we have made for this purpose.  This is due to the postage service manhandling (and on occasion damaging) mudguards in the past.  Unfortunately these boxes are not cheap - but well worth it, to ensure best care of the mudguards - therefore Post and Packing will be more expensive than other items to account for this - but is still provided at cost (to us) only

-  Update October 2019:  Because we have been asked about an alloy version of our steel sports/racing mudguards by customers, we have had another small batch of these made (particularly by Vincent owners whom I assume have seen the photos of them fitted to my own Vincent on our RacingVincent photo gallery).  But please bear in mind that being a soft alloy, it is not unusual for them to have some small scratches or scuff marks as part of the manufacturing process - when I last fitted these to a Vincent I burnished them with a scouring pad and then satin polished them before fitting - which looks much more period - see the picture of my Black Lightning Rep in this listing.

We also advise customers in the UK to collect in person - for the same reasons. Best wishes Paul

Racing Rear 19/20" Mudguard - Steel Middle Bracket (Each)

Product no.: 0842 A11M/831b

In stock

£14.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

To go with our 19"/20" 4 1/4" wide C section sports/racing mudguards (Items 0305R/0307) is this fabricated bracket that locates under the mudguard to allow two mudguard struts to attach the mudguard to the frame (or similar).

The bracket is lasercut and then pressed to the same form as the C section mudguard, so is a good close fit under the mudguard, as per the second photograph.

This bracket is most suitable for fitting under rear mudguards so that a tubular strut can be ran down to the rear axle spindle of your frame - it then well supporting a bum pad or similar.  It is manufactured from 0.112"/2.8mm steel so is good and strong for this purpose - much easier than having to fabricate one yourself!

Update 2022: We can now offer a second version of this bracket - which has longer extending struts - see also Item 1081

To go with our 19"/20" 4 1/4" wide C section sports/racing mudguards (Items 0305R/0307) is this fabricated bracket that locates under the mudguard to allow two mudguard struts to attach the mudguard to the frame (or similar).  This version is the same section as our other bracket - Item 0842) has slightly extended stay holders on both sides - the two stay holders extending about 2.5" from the bottom lip of the mudguard, and the final width where the stay holes are being 5.250".

Pre-War Moseley Type - Racing Bum Pad & Stainless Steel Bolt Kit

Product no.: 1099 BUM2

In stock

£220.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a high quality reproduction of the Pre-War racing 'Moseley Air Cushion' type rear pillion bumpad, as fitted as original equipment on late model Velocette KTT's and occasionally pre-war Manx Nortons and other 1930's racing models.

We have had these replicated exlusively for us from a long established specialist UK upholsterer - using our dimensions, copied from an original pattern 'Moseley Air Cushion' type bum pad (as fitted to my own 1938 Big Plunger Manx Norton - see picture) - which I know was made as a small batch many years ago for a serious collector/restorer of  original Velocette KTT race bikes.

First of all - I am sorry these are not cheap - but we cannot compete with offshore 'mass produced' bum pads, and the long established UK upholstery company is a specialist manufacturer, who only make in small quantities (we cannot get the price any lower than it is) - we have priced these the lowest we can to make manufacturing them viable -.  With all that said, as you would expect - the quality is very nice and the design is based on an original 'race type' bum pad, including red piping - so will definitely be a an eye catching focal point of any sports or racing 1930's - 40's restoration.

It should be noted - just as the original 1930's design for this bum pad type - this bum pad does not have a steel frame.  Instead, as part of its construction, the base material has two strengthened flaps which are attached directly to the mudguard - using 4 small 1/4" BSC hex bolts with 'Pan type' stainless washers under their head to spread the load.  This was how this type of bum pad were originally fastened to the mudguard and gives the bike a very period 'racing' look, as many competition bikes of that era used the same fixing for bum pads.

We supply each bum pad with a pack of 4 : 1/4"BSC x 7/8" stainless steel bolts/nuts, with the correct style 'Norton curved' heads, complete with pan washer (which fit between bolt head and seat mounting flap) and a normal washer (for under the mudguard).  Note - we also sell the same pack of 4 bolts in our fastening section - Item 1098.  We do not punch the holes in the flap - because we do not know what width of mudguard the customer will be fitting this bumpad to - but these bumpads do look excellent on the rear Sports/Racing mudguards we also sell (Item 307 and 305R).  Punching the holes is a simple task - and can be done with any 1/4" or 6mm punch with the flap sitting on a piece of wood or alloy.

The original design had a zip to insert the 'air bladder' - which is not required on our type - as these used normal 'seat sponge' instead.  However, if you look at the photo of the underneath of hte bum pad you will see there is a velcro fastener, so the insert shape can be amended to suit your bike, if required.  Note also, that in the photos of the bum pad on the wooden surface, the sponge does not look overly filled - this is because the bumpad in the photo is lying flat - but when fitted to a mudguard, the curve of the mudguard will push the centre of the bumpad out to give it a more 'filled' effect.

The vital dimensions are as follows:

- Length of main rectangle of pad:                  250mm

- Width of main rectangle of pad:                   165mm

-  Width of the two mudguard securing flaps:  145mm

- Height on shallow end (unfitted):                   90mm

- Height at deeper end (unfitted):                   130mm

Update June 2022:  We are only having these made in small quantity batchs, therefore, dependent on demand, we may need to take a reservation with a deposit between batch's.  Currently, they are in stock

Background to this design of Bumpad:

As many customers know - trying to find period design sports or racing 'bumpads' as fitted in period to 1930's-40's race and sports bikes is very difficult.  I have spent many years looking for genuine pads that look correct on a competition bike - with very little luck! They are nearly always split or have just broken apart or got ripped.

The bum pad listed here is based on an original pre-war manufacturers design and was called the 'Moseley Air Cushion'.  The original pre-war design was original fitment on late 1930's Velocette KTT race bikes - see the period factory pictures of a MkVIII Velocette fitted with this design of bum pad.

The original design had a rubber air bladder inside it, which could be pumped up.  It had a small zip on its saddle facing side to facilitate this.  Very few of these original bum pads have survived - but approximately 30 years ago I found a very tatty and rotted example in a friends old barn . . . but the rubber bladder had perished and the cover had rotted . . . therefore it eventually got thrown away by the owner (something I have always regretted).  a few years later though, another friend (and serious collector of Velocette race bikes) had a small batch of these bumpads made - and I was able to purchase one for the 1938 Big Plunger Manx Norton I was restoring at the time - see photo.

Since then, I have often been asked by people looking at the bike - where they can get a bum pad like that?? - so after many years of searching for the original manufacturer, we have now spent some months discussing a batch - and taking dimensions, which have been replicated here.  The only major difference to the original design is the lack of air- bladder, (and zip to insert it) and we have made the shallow end fractionally deeper, to make it more suitable for fitting to both Rigid and Plunger Norton sports models (you will notice on the original version fitted to my Big Plunger Norton, it required a steeel insert under the bum pad to obtain the right height - these bum pads have been trial fitted on a similar model, to get the most likely height).  Not a cheap item - but definitely an unusual and period looking item that will help any sports/racing restoration.

Note: if this bum pad is showing out of stock - it can still be ordered, as we have them made in small batches to order (availability should be within 4 - 6 weeks between batches).

Pre-War - Plain Black Style 'Wedged' - Sporting/Racing Bum Pad (Steel Frame)

Product no.: 1100B BUM4

In stock

£52.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a high quality reproduction of a typical 1930's-40's black 'bum pad' as commonly fitted to many Pre-War sports or racing bikes.  This type is 'Wedged' - i.e. slightly higher on one end than the other, and typical of the type fitted to competition bikes in period.  This bum pad has a steel frame and like most bum pads of the period, the frame has 4 extending tabs that allow it to be bolted to the mudguard.

In the accompanyning photographs we have shown one of these bum pads loosely placed over one of our Sports/Racing C-Section Rear mudguards - Iand I believe 1/4" hex bolts would be perfect for mounting it to this type of mudguard - I always use that size.  Note: on a narrow rear mudguard such as in thie picture - it may be better to gently 'tweak' the tabs so they better match the arc of slimmer racing mudguards - but this is easy to do and I have always had to do this when fitting similar bum pads to my own Racing Bikes.

Price is Each

This is a high quality reproduction of a typical 1930's-40's black 'bum pad' as commonly fitted to many Pre-War sports or racing bikes.  These come to us from a specialist UK based seat manufacturer - however, I believe that they actually have the bum pads manufactured offshore - and this is reflected by the very reasonable price these are offered at. But please do not be misled by that - we believe the quality of material and manufacture is as good as any we have seen made in the UK.

(Note:  regular customers might remember we were offering an almost identical bum pad pre-Covid, which was fully manufactured in the UK.  Although they too were excellent quality . . . we could not warrant the huge difference in price - when the build quality and material quality of this bum pad is virtually identical to that ot the far more expensive type)

As with most 'Wedged' type bum pads - as well as being used with the slightly higher end at the rear (i.e. so a racing rider could slide backwards off the saddle, and rest against the bumpad) - they can also be turned the other way round if desired, and used as a pillon pad - although as with most 1930's sports type pillion pads - they may not offer a pillion rider much comfort!!

These bum pads have a steel frame and the dimensions are shown below - but when fitting these to sports motorcycles in the past (which may have narrow mudguards) - I have found the eyelets of the frame can easily be 'tweaked' to match the 'C' profile of whatever mudguard you have fitted.

The vital dimensions are as follows:

- Length of main rectangle of pad:                  260mm

- Width of main rectangle of pad:                   160mm

-  Centre Width of the mounting holes of the steel frame:  90mm

- Height on shallow end (edge of frame to centre of sponge at top):        76mm

- Height at deeper end  (edge of frame to centre of sponge at top):        100mm

Background to this design of Bumpad:

I have the same design of bumpad to this fitted to my 1938 Rigid framed Racing International (see the bike in the lower left corner of the accompanyning photograph) - although that bum pad was manufactured approximately  25-30 years ago - these are close to identical.  Although this bum pad does not come with mounting screws - we do sell suitable stainless steel 1/4" BSC hex bolt sets in our Fastenings section.
