Lucas M01L (Mag/Dyno) - E3/E3L Dynamo Brushes - Pair

Product no.: 1211 200290

In stock

£21.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are the rectangular brushes fitted to the Lucas E3 and E3L Dynamo unit that sits atop the Lucas Magdyno unit, fitted to most Norton Single Cylinder roadgoing models.  These brushes are to fit the E3(L) 2 brush type dynamo, fitted to Norton models from 1937 onwards.

Price is Per Pair

Background:

The Lucas E3 (two brush) type dynamo was fitted to Norton single cylinder models from 1937 onwards.  These brushes are to fit that model.  The dynamo looks as shown in the last photo in this listing, and as you can see the brushes are accessable, after releasing the end cover, and (if memory serves me right), - access to the brushes is easier if the tin circular end cover is also removed.  Sometime in the late 1940's/early 1950's this dynamo type was upgraded to a slightly more powerful and longer unit (which I believe was when it was then called the E3L) - identifiable by having a distinctive shaped encapsulating single piece pressed cover - these brushes should also fit that dynamo type.

The brushes are held in by circular coil springs (Part J in the picture) which can easily be held back with a small screwdriver to allow the old brushes to be removed and checked.  It is also a good idea to check the commutator (copper segnments that the brushes push against), to check for graphite build up or corrosion - but you need to be extremely careful not to damage these segments when cleaning them.

Note: Prior to 1937, the Lucas dynamo was a 3 Brush unit - and I do not believe these brushes will fit that earlier unit.  However, you can email me on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk if you have an earier unit - as in the future I may be trying to obtain the brushes for that earlier type.

Also - if you require more information on the different electrical units fitted to Norton single cylinder models, or the different wiring harnesses fitted over the lifetime of the different single cylinder models - we now produce a set of 3 facsimile items showing Lucas parts and the different wiring diagrams - See Item 1213 (use our Search function in the left sidebar - and enter the number 1213).

Lucas Mag/Dyno Dynamo - Rubber Wiring Input Shroud (Each)

Product no.: 0428 LUC008

In stock

£4.80
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the distinctive kidney shaped rubber shroud that fits over the input wires on the pre-war and immediate post-war Lucas Dynamo - where those dynamos were fitted with a flat bakelite cover, on the Lucas Magdyno units.

Although I cannot be exact on when this type of 'short' dynamo with bakelite cover (as in one of the accompanyning photos) was fitted to Norton singles (and other marques using a similar Lucas Magdyno unit) - I believe it was approximately 1937 - 1951 (although this may vary be a year or so each way).

for these models, the two dynamo wires were screwed into the bakelite cover with a brown fibre plate holding them in, then this rubber shroud fitted over those wires so they were not exposed to the elements.  A very handy cover to have as most originals eventually perish

End Cover Clip to fit Lucas Mag/Dyno (Each)

Product no.: 1026 Lucas32

In stock

£12.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a nice quality reproduction of the spring type clip, used to retain the chromed pressed steel points cover on Lucas Magdyno units, as used on most Norton roadgoing singles from the 1930's through to the late 1950's. It is is a nice quality plated steel version, as per the original.  This was Lucas Part No LU463898

Note - there were various length spring clips fitted to different Lucas (and BTH) magneto models, many looking very similar.  If you are intending to fit this to a different magneto - then it is worth noting this item has the following dimensions:

- Length of pillar, from base of hex to where the spring strip is riveted: 42mm

- Length of spring strip from centre of rivet to the dimple that locates in centre of points cover: 40mm

Please check this is the correct spring lever clip to fit your magneto before ordering .. . to save having to return it!

Magneto Platform Screws for OHV/SV Models - Lucas Mag/Dyno Type - Pack of 4

Product no.: 0712 E3831

In stock

£11.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are the coarse thread countersunk screws that are used to secure the Lucas Mag/Dyno to the cast aluminium platform used on OHV and SV Norton singles.  Price is for pack of 4

Note:  These screws were only used on OHV and SV Norton singles, because the SOHC engine had its magneto platform as part of its crankcase casting - therefore the SOHC magneto uses threaded studs not screws.  I do not currently offer these, but email on sales@racingvincent.co.uk if you need them - I may be manufacturing soon

Norton WD Type Mag/Dyno Platform Casting - Each

Product no.: 1198 3711_WD

In stock

£29.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a nice reporduction of the Norton Magdyno (iron) platform, that was fitted to some Norton 16H WD models - but should also fit other pre-1948 SV and OHV models.

Price is Each.

It should be noted that you are unlikely to see this type of Norton MagDyno platform listed in any of the original Norton Spare Parts Lists - both pre-war and post-war Norton single cylinder spare parts list show an aluminium platform - shown pre-war as being part number 3711, with the 1948 onwards type being C2/117 (see accompanyning photos).

Even the original1937/39 Norton 16H WD Spare Parts List (we sell a facsimile - Item 0234) shows the alloy platform type 3711!, although I suspect that was because this spare parts list was printed approx 1938, before the start of WWII, when they were preparing for war and aluminium was still available.

However, this type of (cast iron?) magneto platform was often to be found at autojumbles many years ago - and were always associated wtih WD 16H Norton's, but like so many WD 16H parts - where surplus items were readily available a few years ago:  they are now scarce - and have also been used to fit onto civilian single cylinder models.  I cannot be sure - but I suspect that although early WD Nortons (i.e. those manufactured pre 1940) were look to have been fitted with the civilian alloy type magneto mount - once the war was in progress and aluminium was scarce - they switched over to this slightly heavier, but readily available cast iron/steel type.  That being the case though - mount positions should be same as other pre-war Norton OHV/SV models of the same period, up to 1947.

The same should be true of this reproduction magneto mount platform - which looks to be a nice quality cast iron/steel casting, and just as per the original Norton design, and all machined to take an original Lucas MagDyno unit.  Given that it would have been taken from a genuine 16H platform - I would expect it would fit most Norton SV/OHV models from the 1930's through to 1947.

Special Note - not the same as C2/117 (1948 onwards) magneto platforms:

Note: the Norton OHV/SV range had a major re-design in 1948, and although not widely known - the positioning of the magneto platform mount holes changed slightly.  The 1948 onwards OHV/SV alloy type magneto platform was listed as part number C2/117 - And Item 1198 we offer here  IS NOT THAT TYPE, and has different offsets (I have seeen this type of magneto platform referred to as that part number elsewhere in the past- and believe that is wrong)

To prove that - see the accompanyning photographs, where I show this WD type (Item 1198) alongside a genuine 1948 onwards C2/117 mag platform from my own collection.  As you can see the magneto hole vs inner engine plate face offsets are clearly different!  (if you require more detail on the dimensions to check, please email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk .

FYI - as a bit of information on Norton parts numbering post war - the 'C2' prefix on many Norton parts from 1948 onwards through to the mid 1950's normally indicates there was redesign of the part for the 1948 engine design, postwar parts specifically for the 1938/47 engine design often being prefixed 'B2' - logic dictates therefore the 48 design onwards was different).   Therefore - I would suspect that this mag platform type will not fit 1948 onwards OHV/SV models.  However, if unsure - you can email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk for more information on dimensions and offsets.

Although I suspect this item was made offshore, it is supplied to us from a reputable UK supplier and looks good value for the price - as magneto platoforms for Norton OHV/SV singles are now very difficult to source.

Note we also sell the magneto mount screws for OHV/SV mount platforms - our item  0712 as well as the special timing side lock nut plate fitted at the base of all OHV/SV magneto platform mounts - Item 1037.

Lucas Mag/Dyno Type LU463109 Fibre Gear: 58 Tooth - Each

Product no.: 1184 Lucas42

In stock

£22.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the red fibre gear that was fitted to the magneto component of Lucas Mag/Dyno Units and was original Lucas Part Number LU463109 or 463109.  This gear is 58 tooth.

These are nicely made items from a trusted UK supplier, the quality of the fibre material and the cutting of the teeth looks just as per the original.

Attached is an exploded diagram of a Lucas MagDyno showing where this gear fits - it providing the drive from the magneto to the Lucas dynamo, which has a smaller metal gear.  Therefore this fibre gear is almost 'sacrificial' - i.e. it designed to take most of the wear . . . and often because of that, showing a lot of wear (they can also attract grit and dirt if the dynamo has been off for a while - I have a Lucas magdyno mag (minus dynamo unit) that has been sat on the shelf of one of my storage areas for at least 30 years!).

Price is Each.

Genuine Lucas - Magneto Pickup Hex Screws to Fit K2F Type Magnetos - Pair

Product no.: 1192 Lucas47

In stock

£4.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This listing is for a pair of hex (with screwdriver slot as well) Pickup Screws to fit Lucas K2F (twin cylinder) magnetos (as commonly fitted to many Norton twins, but should also fit KVF Vincent magnetos) - these screws being cadmium plated steel from the genuine Lucas authentic classic range.

Being from Lucas, you can have confidence they will replicate the shape and dimensions of original screws.

Price is for a pair of screws - i.e. one pickup (if fitting to a twin cylinder magneto, you will to order 2 x this item)

Note that we also sell a similar screw to fit Lucas M01 Magdyno magnetos (Item 1192) - but these screws are slightly shorter than that screw having a screw 'shaft' length of approximately 13mm.

Although described by Lucas as being for a K2F magneto, I would expect they would also fit other twin cylinder magnetos that use hex head screws to retain the bakelite pickups (rather than clips) - I.e. KVFTT or K2FC magnetos etc
