Lucas Type 6v Voltage Regulator (Similar to Norton 33108/36084 Mid 1930's-50's) - (Per Unit)

Product no.: 1092 Lucas030

This replica of the 33108/36084 type 6v Voltage Regulator is a nice example of the type originally fitted to most roadgoing Norton single cylinder models, fitted on many makes of motorcycles from mid 1930's to the late 1950's, and on Norton single cylinder models from 1937 onwards.

Price is per unit.

It is supplied to us from a UK distributor, but I believe is manufactured offshore - but I have to say, that when I looked at one - I was impressed by the quality of it, particularly the electrical components - from memory the original 1930's-50's units looked very little different to this - and of course this unit has the double advantage of not having been shaken to bits for 70 years on top of an old bike (if you are still using the original!), and having fresh connections (original units are prone to corroding connections and sticking relays).

It looks to offer very good value for money.

Note:  These voltage regulators look to be manufactured in exactly the same way as original period Lucas items, i.e. electrical/mechanical, with two relay units -  and with two coils and the adjuster screws pre-set and painted over (so they are ready to fit and not needing any adjustment).  And therefore they are constructed the same as the original period technology.

However, if you are less concerned about originality - and want a more up to date electrical system - we also offer 'Solid State' V-Reg 2a Voltage Regulator, which are excellent quality and well proven over many years - these can be fitted in a stripped out original Lucas Voltage Regulator case - See Item Listing 0574.  I found out about these solid state regulators when restoring my Vincent Comet some years ago - which had a notoriously unreliable Miller voltage req unit.  I will leave the choice with you.

Solid State Voltage Regulator (V-Reg-2a) - Modern Replacement for Original Lucas/Miller Type

Product no.: 0574 33018_SS

Not in stock

£84.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This product listing is for an excellent quality modern 'Solid State' dynamo regulator which can be used to replace original 'insides' of the notoriously unreliable Lucas 33018a type mechanical regulator, fitted to most Norton single roadgoing models both pre and post war.  The Lucas regulator was fitted to Norton's in conjunction with the Lucas E3 type Dynamo.  Likewise, this modern solid state regulator is also a suitable replacement for the (even more unreliable!) Miller type regulator, as fitted to Vincent models postwar for regulating the Miller D6 dynamo.

'Solid State' means it is totally sealed with no moving parts and using modern reliable semi-conductors which can handle up to 100w at 6volt and even more for the 12 volt version (providing of course your dynamo is capable of providing that power!).  This particular dynamo regulator is manufactured by Tab-Tec and is well known and trusted. You can either fit it somewhere where it is not easily visible - or as I am using it on my Vincent 500 - I have removed the 'guts' of the original Vincent Miller regulator from its case and have fitted it in there - see accompanying photographs.  I will also be doing the same thing when I come to fit one to my 1937 roadgoing Norton International - I will remove the innards of a Lucas 33018a regulator and place it in there (just like the one in the photograph).

The other good bit of news about this type of regulator is that it can be fitted to both 6 volt and 12 volt systems.  Originally Norton and Vincent were both fitted with 6volt systems, but if you have subsequently fitted a 12 volt system to your bike, this will still work - it just requires one of the 4 wires is not used, covered in the instructions

Note:  This particular type of V-Reg-2a regulator is a NEGATIVE EARTH polarity version - negative earth being the normal wiring method for nearly all Norton singles and Vincent version C motorcycles.  It is important that you check your wiring harness is Negative earth, as this regulator will not work on Positive Earth and will be damaged if wired incorrectly.  If you do require a Positive Earth version, I can supply these to special order.

As a final point, when fitting mine I sheathed the wires in black pvc sheathing (as can be seen in the photograph of the miller regulator), as most wiring harness's on our bikes would have - so I have included a similar length of pvc sheathing with every unit - you might not get this if purchased from other suppliers!

The unit comes with full instructions and guarantee from my supplier and is an excellent and reliable replacement for the crappy old originals!

(Lucas) Voltage Regulator Clip - Under Saddle Norton International Fitting Type (Each)

Product no.: 0217 A11/843

In stock

£20.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the fabricated bracket that was used on Postwar Pre-Featherbed framed SOHC International models to mount the Lucas Voltage Regulator, under the saddle.  As shown in the 1948 Norton Spare Parts catalog - Part Number A11/843.

The mounting bolt affixes to the frame rear mudguard/top oil tank bracket mount - as can be seen by an exert from the 1948 Spare Parts Catalog in the accompanying photographs, which shows the posistion it was mounted under the saddle).

This item is fabricated by us, using an original Norton International mount bracket as the pattern, and is supplied in primer.  It is lasercut and then pressed from  the original thick gauge steel to avoid any vibration to the Voltage Regulator in service (requiring heating to cherry red before we can press it into the correct shape - a laborious task, as we then linish and paint in yellow primer to prevent rusting).

For pre-war SOHC owners or OHV/SV owners also using the Lucas style Voltage regulator - some additional information:

On pre-war models using the Lucas Voltage regulator, I have seen them mounted in various positions, but normally either under the saddle (in which case this bracket can be used), or someitmes on top of the rear frame tube that went down from the saddle post to the rear wheel.

For post-war OHV/SV owners with rigid or plunger models - if you look at the accompanyning picture from the 1948 Spare Parts Catalog, you will see that on the left is a picture of the OHV/SV type oil tank, with a different style of bracket that had two mounting points - again the rear mudguard frame tube, but an additional mount hole on the top of the oil tank.  Again, although I have not tried it - I see no reason why the type of bracket shown here could not be used as a substitute if you do not have this original OHV/SV type bracket (they are very difficult to find now).  However, we do have an original OHV/SV bracket as a pattern, and I may be fabricating a batch of the OHV/SV type in late 2020 - email sales@racingvincent.co.uk if interested in one

Final point with all models where the Lucas Regulator is fitted under the saddle - it is important to ensure that the when the saddle and spring is at full deflection (a bigger problem as I get older and my arse gets fatter!), the springs of the saddle do not hit the regulator . . . this was always an issue when new (particularly if you have fitted some kind of cutout to the brass regulator cover, as my father used to do!).  And if you are revamping your electrics - I would recomend you considering ditching the original Lucas regulator gubbins (which were always unreliable) and moving to a modern 'Solid State' regulator, which can be fitted inside the original regulator case - we can offer possibly the best version of these on the market - the V-Reg 2a Solid State Regulatore : See Item 0574

Genuine Lucas B38-6 (Large Rubber Style) Battery Box - PU7D

Product no.: 0577 B386

In stock
can be shipped within 10 days

£37.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a genuine Lucas - empty battery box of the large rubber (B38-6) type - which is the type of 6v battery originally fitted to a number of british bikes of the 40's/50's/60's - including both Norton and Vincent singles.  It was also not unusual to fit this type of battery to Norton singles of the 1930's, as a replacement for earlier T-Shape batteries which were discontinued after WWII.

This empty battery box is a modern (hard rubber) replica of the original Lucas type (but still manfactured by Lucas), but does not have any battery inside it - instead it is ready to take a modern 'gell cell' battery.  In the 3rd and 4th photograph I show one of those modern dry cell batteries (not included) - which will fit snugly in the case.

Its dimensions are as follows:

Internal Dimensions:

Internal drop (i.e how high from base to lip of main case body): 133mm. Internal width x depth : 104mm x 76.5mm.

External Dimensions:

External dimensions (which should be standard battery case size for this type of original 6V Battery, as fitted to most 1930’s – mid 50’s Norton singles : 160mm Height x 115mm width x 89.5mm depth.

Update 2022: note that Lucas are now changing the colour of their packaging over to red - see last photograph.  Therefore some deliveries are still with the green box, but may also be the red type.  Contents for both are identical

Norton OHV/Side Valve - Rigid/Plunger Frame 'Rectangular' Type Battery Carrier

Product no.: 1027 E2/586

Not in stock

£53.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a reasonable copy of the battery carrier that was fitted to OHV and Side-Valve rigid and plunger framed models, that fitted the PU7D size rectangular style upright 6v battery (of type originally supplied by Lucas or Exide) - as was regularly fitted to Norton models from late 1930's to the mid 1950's (and particularly the WD16H miltary model, from which I suspect this carrier has been copied).

These battery carriers are manufactured by one of our offshore suppliers and although they are a reasonable copy of the original item.  However we do not like the hinge bolt as they come to us - we have seen a couple where they have not been riveted properly and have come loose - therefore we check each carrier and replace this with a stainless steel hex head bolt and tiny Nyloc nut and washer (see second photograph)- which is we think a much more satisfactory fitting (however, if the original hinge rivet looks secure . . . we will tape the stainless bolt and nut to the outer frame, and leave you to decide if you wish to fit it . .. we think they look much smarter).  Nnote - if you see similar battery carriers being sold elsewhere - they are not likely to have the same long stainless steel hinge bolt/nut fitted!.

Price is each.  Battery carrier consists of fabricated carrier, with hinged front and a nicely formed top threadedbar (nickel plated) with nicely made period acorn nuts - as per main photo. They come with the the main frame painted - but as with many offshore items, this is only a light coat to protect against rust - and as with all good quality restorations, we would recommend they are rubbed down and additional primer/topcoat are applied before final fitting.

Battery Fitting  As can be seen in the accompanying photographs - we can also supply a reproduction PU7D Lucas battery box (genuine Lucas item), of the correct type originally fitted to this carrier type - Our catalog item no 0577.  This battery carrier is a nice quality modern shell, which can then be fitted inside with either with a normal modern wet or dry gell battery to maintain the look of originality.  We also sell the original rubber tray often fitted under this type of battery (Item 0435), to help protect the battery from vibration.

This listing is for battery carrier only, item 0577 and Item 0435 sold seperately

Norton models fitted:  First of all - although these look visibly similar to the SOHC version of the same battery carrier - they are not SOHC items, they are for OHV and SV models only (the SOHC version has a slightly longer bottom bracket, as the International model had an oil tank that extended past the saddle down tube - so the fabrication extended further outwards to avoid fouling the oil tank), but it should fit most mid 1930's - mid 1950's OHV/SV models. (i.e. pre-swinging arm or Featherbed models).

Update 2021: If customers are interested - we are considering having a small batch of both the SOHC and OHV/SV battery carriers made, of the type that fitted the distinctive 'T-Shape' battery (Norton catalog part A11/586 and A2/586) through the 1930's/40's.  Email us at sales@racingivncent.co.uk if interested, although these will be UK made and price likely to be much higher

Rubber Base Mat For Lucas Battery

Product no.: 0435 LUC009

In stock

£4.10
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Rubber base pad to fit under the Lucas 'hard rubber' style batteries. Ever since the first time I worked on a bike my father always taught me to fit a piece of rubber under the battery to help prevent it cracking - well this pad was made just for that purpose! This pad is 5 3/4" x 3 1/2" dimensions - which is actually meant for the mid 1950's-1960's Lucas type batteries, but can also be used on the earlier narrower type Lucas batteries often fitted to Norton's on rigid and plunger framed versions, simply by trimming an inch or so off one side. (Note: if you have a 'T' shaped battery and battery carrier you do not need to fit this type of mat)

Lucas M01L (Mag/Dyno) and other Lucas Magnetos -HT Pickup Brush and Spring - Each

Product no.: 1219 LUC037

In stock

£5.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are the rectangular brushes fitted to the Lucas E3 and E3L Dynamo unit that sits atop the Lucas Magdyno unit, fitted to most Norton Single Cylinder roadgoing models.  These brushes are to fit the E3(L) 2 brush type dynamo, fitted to Norton models from 1937 onwards.

Price is Per Pair

Background:

The Lucas E3 (two brush) type dynamo was fitted to Norton single cylinder models from 1937 onwards.  These brushes are to fit that model.  The dynamo looks as shown in the last photo in this listing, and as you can see the brushes are accessable, after releasing the end cover, and (if memory serves me right), - access to the brushes is easier if the tin circular end cover is also removed.  Sometime in the late 1940's/early 1950's this dynamo type was upgraded to a slightly more powerful and longer unit (which I believe was when it was then called the E3L) - identifiable by having a distinctive shaped encapsulating single piece pressed cover - these brushes should also fit that dynamo type.

The brushes are held in by circular coil springs (Part J in the picture) which can easily be held back with a small screwdriver to allow the old brushes to be removed and checked.  It is also a good idea to check the commutator (copper segnments that the brushes push against), to check for graphite build up or corrosion - but you need to be extremely careful not to damage these segments when cleaning them.

Note: Prior to 1937, the Lucas dynamo was a 3 Brush unit - and I do not believe these brushes will fit that earlier unit.  However, you can email me on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk if you have an earier unit - as in the future I may be trying to obtain the brushes for that earlier type.

Also - if you require more information on the different electrical units fitted to Norton single cylinder models, or the different wiring harnesses fitted over the lifetime of the different single cylinder models - we now produce a set of 3 facsimile items showing Lucas parts and the different wiring diagrams - See Item 1213 (use our Search function in the left sidebar - and enter the number 1213).

Lucas M01L (Mag/Dyno) -Earthing Brush and Spring - Each

Product no.: 1220 LUC038

In stock

£5.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This listing is for the (armature) Earthing Brush and spring fitted to those Lucas Magdyno M01L magnetos that were fitted with earthing brushes - i.e. with a brass earthing side screw, as shown in the accompanyning photos.

Price is for brush and spring.

Note - The Lucas Magdyno unit was made for many years and fitted to numerous motorcycle makes and models.  I am not the best expert - but I led to understand that an earthing screw was not fitted to all Magdyno models - but it was fitted to a number of M01L magnetos fitted to Norton single cylinder models.  The accompanyning photos shows an original Lucas C/W rotation (1938-47 type only) M01L magneto - and as you can see it is fitted with a brass earthing screw at the side of the magneto body.  It is this type of magneto this earthing bruss and spring are intended to fit.

Note:  we also sell a brass Earthing screw to fit the later K2F twin cylinder magneto (see Item 1209).  It should be noted that the K2F brass earthing screw will not fit this type of M01L magneto - although they look visually similar, the M01L earthing screw has a different thread (and as I update this listing in January 2024, we do not offer the M01L earthing screw yet).

Reproduction Lucas E3(LM) Dynamo Bakelite Cover (1937 - @1953 models) - Offset Screw: Each

Product no.: 0616 LUC014

In stock

£14.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a plastic reproduction of the black bakelite cover fitted to Lucas Magdyno Dynalmo's of the E3LM type that were original fitment on most Norton roadgoing models from approximately 1937 - to the early 1950's.

Price is Each

This particular cover is identifiable to the Lucas E3LM Dynamo type, fitted to roadgoing Norton singles from 1937 - becasue the securing screw is moulded off centre (see photographs).  There was also another type of Lucas Dynamo of the same period, where the hole for the retaining screw was in the middle - we can obtain that cover as well - email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk.  Please check your own dynamo and ensure this is the correct (off centre  screw hole) for your dynamo before ordering.

Most Norton roadgoing models were fitted with the E3LM Dynamo Type from 1937 (the type prior to that was a very different pressed steel cover - sorry, we cannot help with that - although I have one fitted to one of my bikes) and was fitted to approximately the late 1940's/early 1950's, when it was replaced by the next variation of this dynamo - which was slightly longer, more powerful and (again) had a pressed steel cover.

There is a period line drawing of the end of the Lucas E3LM this cover was intended to fit - taken from a period 1950's Norton workshop manual - and as you can see it shows the same 'offset' screw retaining hole

Fitting Notes and update June 2023: This item had been out of stock for about 4 years now - but pleased to say it is now available again - I note that the moulding shape is slightly different from the proevious version. and it looks like it maty have been re-inforced around the wire connectors - maytbe to strengthen it, but the layout and fitment looks the same as the previous version.

I noted that the new version, as well as being strenghtened, has another slight difference over the original type (which is shown in one of the photographs as a comparison, alongside the version listed here)- the old type had two letters in the moulding where the new type do not - 'D' and 'F', which reference the original wiring.  Use this photograph as a reference when fitting to remind yourself which connector is which.

Reproduction Lucas E3H Dynamo Bakelite Cover - Centralised Screw: Each

Product no.: 1221 LU200354

In stock

£14.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Reproduction of the black bakelite cover fitted to Lucas Magdyno Dynalmo's of the E3H type - which are identifiable by having a centralised mounting screw hole (see photo). See listing for more detail.

Price is Each

This particular cover is identifiable to the Lucas E3H Dynamo type, because it had the mounting hole in the centre of the cover.  There was also another type of Lucas Dynamo of the same period, where the hole for the retaining screw was offset - and that offset type was more normal fitting for the Norton models - and is our Item 0616.  However, if you have another make of motorcycle fitted with this central screw (or a Norton model that does have this type) - then this cover is of that type - and now very difficult to obtain

Please check your own dynamo and ensure this is the correct (off centre  screw hole) for your dynamo before ordering.
