Lucas M01L (Mag/Dyno) - E3/E3L Dynamo Brushes - Pair

Product no.: 1211 200290

In stock

£21.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are the rectangular brushes fitted to the Lucas E3 and E3L Dynamo unit that sits atop the Lucas Magdyno unit, fitted to most Norton Single Cylinder roadgoing models.  These brushes are to fit the E3(L) 2 brush type dynamo, fitted to Norton models from 1937 onwards.

Price is Per Pair

Background:

The Lucas E3 (two brush) type dynamo was fitted to Norton single cylinder models from 1937 onwards.  These brushes are to fit that model.  The dynamo looks as shown in the last photo in this listing, and as you can see the brushes are accessable, after releasing the end cover, and (if memory serves me right), - access to the brushes is easier if the tin circular end cover is also removed.  Sometime in the late 1940's/early 1950's this dynamo type was upgraded to a slightly more powerful and longer unit (which I believe was when it was then called the E3L) - identifiable by having a distinctive shaped encapsulating single piece pressed cover - these brushes should also fit that dynamo type.

The brushes are held in by circular coil springs (Part J in the picture) which can easily be held back with a small screwdriver to allow the old brushes to be removed and checked.  It is also a good idea to check the commutator (copper segnments that the brushes push against), to check for graphite build up or corrosion - but you need to be extremely careful not to damage these segments when cleaning them.

Note: Prior to 1937, the Lucas dynamo was a 3 Brush unit - and I do not believe these brushes will fit that earlier unit.  However, you can email me on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk if you have an earier unit - as in the future I may be trying to obtain the brushes for that earlier type.

Also - if you require more information on the different electrical units fitted to Norton single cylinder models, or the different wiring harnesses fitted over the lifetime of the different single cylinder models - we now produce a set of 3 facsimile items showing Lucas parts and the different wiring diagrams - See Item 1213 (use our Search function in the left sidebar - and enter the number 1213).

Lockwired Housing Screws - Lucas Comp Type: NR1 Road Racing Mag Type : Stainless Steel - Each

Product no.: 0861 Lucas016

In stock

£6.80
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These housing screws are CNC manufactured in stainless steel to the exact specification of the original housing screws fitted to Lucas road racing NR1 magnetos of the 1940's-1960's.

This particular type have a hex head (and ours are manufactured with the correct imperial hex dimensions - not metric!), two through holes for lockwire (of the correct hole dimension - so they look just like originals) but no screwdriver slot.

for some reason the rare NR1 type magneto did not normally have a screwdriver slot on the housing screws, unlike the more common slotted screw which was fitted to most other Lucas competition magnetos. I believe the Lucas NR1 was first manufactured pre-war, as well as just post-war (and was an optional fitment on Manx Norton's to more commonly seen BTH KD1), so perhaps it was because this magneto preceded the later 1950's/60's K2FC and similar, that Lucas themselves realised in practice that a screwdriver slot was a good idea - and introduced it later on?

If you prefer the slotted type screw we also sell that - Item 0860 (and there are photos of some of the magnetos commonly using that type of housing screw in that listing), but if you have a genuine road racing NR1 magneto - of the type shown in this listing, then this un-slotted type is actually the correct original fitment

We know these are not cheap . . . but no apologies - they are a difficult and time consuming item to make, even on a CNC - the correct hex is milled onto round bar, then the lockwire holes are also milled with the correct size hole.  They do look very nice though and unlike original will not corrode as they are in Stainless Steel. They really set off a restored magneto.  Price is Each

Final Note:  Note an original NR1 housing bolt was used as the pattern for these bolts and is shown in the last photograph alongside these

Red Button Type - Handlebar Magneto Cutout Button - 7/8" Handlebar Size - Each

Product no.: 1214 Cutout01

In stock
can be shipped within 10 days

£8.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Pretty Button type kill switch - with Red centre button, ideal for using as a magneto kill switch, or also as a horn switch if required.  Fits 7/8" handlebars.

Price is Each

This button type switch is typical of horn or magneto kill switches fitted to British motorcycles from the 1930's through to the 1960's - but not normally seen with a red central button - which makes it quite striking and ideal for a magneto kill switch.

For anyone that has not fitted this type of 'kill switch' before (particularly with a magneto) - they only require one 'Live' wire to be fitted (for a magneto kill switch - this is normally fitted to the magneto end cover and presses on the inside of the cap against the central points plate bolt), which has a screw fixing.  The body of the horn itself is the second contact - this being earthed to the handlebars.

I fitted one of these buttons to my own Vincent Comet - see photo, which looks quite pretty.

HT Cable - Ochre and Black Cloth : Sheathed Competition Lead 1920's-40's (per ft)

Product no.: 0732 KD1 028

In stock

£3.90
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- Woven cloth HT lead of the type originally used on many competition and roadgoing motorcycles from the early 1920's through to the 1940's.  Ochre/Orange in colour with black flecks - this HT lead is sheathed in a durable and waterproof covering that gives a very authentic look - as per the celluloid covering of the original period HT lead.  Price is per foot

This HT lead looks great on any period restoration pre-1950's, but particularly good on competition motorcycles - where this high quality type lead seemed to have been more commonly used (rather than the standard black rubber HT lead we also sell, used on many roadgoing models).  I have seen original competition BTH magneto's fitted with this style of HT lead - although in all cases, the original celulloid was perished and the HT lead was no longer usable.

When ordering - quantity of 1 equals 1 foot (I normally find 18" to two feet is the ideal length for a BTH KD1 on a Norton SOHC engine).

As you can see here, I have shown photos of it being used on some of my Norton BTH magneto's, but also I have used it on my veteran 1919 Douglas model, in conjunction with original brass HT knurled spark plug fittings - where it looks really excellent.

Note Spring 2019:  I have been looking for a supplier of this type of competition HT lead for many years, so am really pleased we are now able to offer it.  Not cheap (it is manufactured  in the US), but looks excellent and I will be fitting it to some of my restorations in the future
