End Cover Clip to fit Lucas Mag/Dyno (Each)

Product no.: 1026 Lucas32

In stock

£12.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a nice quality reproduction of the spring type clip, used to retain the chromed pressed steel points cover on Lucas Magdyno units, as used on most Norton roadgoing singles from the 1930's through to the late 1950's. It is is a nice quality plated steel version, as per the original.  This was Lucas Part No LU463898

Note - there were various length spring clips fitted to different Lucas (and BTH) magneto models, many looking very similar.  If you are intending to fit this to a different magneto - then it is worth noting this item has the following dimensions:

- Length of pillar, from base of hex to where the spring strip is riveted: 42mm

- Length of spring strip from centre of rivet to the dimple that locates in centre of points cover: 40mm

Please check this is the correct spring lever clip to fit your magneto before ordering .. . to save having to return it!

Norton WD Type Mag/Dyno Platform Casting - Each

Product no.: 1198 3711_WD

In stock

£29.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a nice reporduction of the Norton Magdyno (iron) platform, that was fitted to some Norton 16H WD models - but should also fit other pre-1948 SV and OHV models.

Price is Each.

It should be noted that you are unlikely to see this type of Norton MagDyno platform listed in any of the original Norton Spare Parts Lists - both pre-war and post-war Norton single cylinder spare parts list show an aluminium platform - shown pre-war as being part number 3711, with the 1948 onwards type being C2/117 (see accompanyning photos).

Even the original1937/39 Norton 16H WD Spare Parts List (we sell a facsimile - Item 0234) shows the alloy platform type 3711!, although I suspect that was because this spare parts list was printed approx 1938, before the start of WWII, when they were preparing for war and aluminium was still available.

However, this type of (cast iron?) magneto platform was often to be found at autojumbles many years ago - and were always associated wtih WD 16H Norton's, but like so many WD 16H parts - where surplus items were readily available a few years ago:  they are now scarce - and have also been used to fit onto civilian single cylinder models.  I cannot be sure - but I suspect that although early WD Nortons (i.e. those manufactured pre 1940) were look to have been fitted with the civilian alloy type magneto mount - once the war was in progress and aluminium was scarce - they switched over to this slightly heavier, but readily available cast iron/steel type.  That being the case though - mount positions should be same as other pre-war Norton OHV/SV models of the same period, up to 1947.

The same should be true of this reproduction magneto mount platform - which looks to be a nice quality cast iron/steel casting, and just as per the original Norton design, and all machined to take an original Lucas MagDyno unit.  Given that it would have been taken from a genuine 16H platform - I would expect it would fit most Norton SV/OHV models from the 1930's through to 1947.

Special Note - not the same as C2/117 (1948 onwards) magneto platforms:

Note: the Norton OHV/SV range had a major re-design in 1948, and although not widely known - the positioning of the magneto platform mount holes changed slightly.  The 1948 onwards OHV/SV alloy type magneto platform was listed as part number C2/117 - And Item 1198 we offer here  IS NOT THAT TYPE, and has different offsets (I have seeen this type of magneto platform referred to as that part number elsewhere in the past- and believe that is wrong)

To prove that - see the accompanyning photographs, where I show this WD type (Item 1198) alongside a genuine 1948 onwards C2/117 mag platform from my own collection.  As you can see the magneto hole vs inner engine plate face offsets are clearly different!  (if you require more detail on the dimensions to check, please email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk .

FYI - as a bit of information on Norton parts numbering post war - the 'C2' prefix on many Norton parts from 1948 onwards through to the mid 1950's normally indicates there was redesign of the part for the 1948 engine design, postwar parts specifically for the 1938/47 engine design often being prefixed 'B2' - logic dictates therefore the 48 design onwards was different).   Therefore - I would suspect that this mag platform type will not fit 1948 onwards OHV/SV models.  However, if unsure - you can email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk for more information on dimensions and offsets.

Although I suspect this item was made offshore, it is supplied to us from a reputable UK supplier and looks good value for the price - as magneto platoforms for Norton OHV/SV singles are now very difficult to source.

Note we also sell the magneto mount screws for OHV/SV mount platforms - our item  0712 as well as the special timing side lock nut plate fitted at the base of all OHV/SV magneto platform mounts - Item 1037.

Reproduction Lucas E3(LM) Dynamo Bakelite Cover (1937 - @1953 models) - Offset Screw: Each

Product no.: 0616 LUC014

In stock

£14.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is a plastic reproduction of the black bakelite cover fitted to Lucas Magdyno Dynalmo's of the E3LM type that were original fitment on most Norton roadgoing models from approximately 1937 - to the early 1950's.

Price is Each

This particular cover is identifiable to the Lucas E3LM Dynamo type, fitted to roadgoing Norton singles from 1937 - becasue the securing screw is moulded off centre (see photographs).  There was also another type of Lucas Dynamo of the same period, where the hole for the retaining screw was in the middle - we can obtain that cover as well - email us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk.  Please check your own dynamo and ensure this is the correct (off centre  screw hole) for your dynamo before ordering.

Most Norton roadgoing models were fitted with the E3LM Dynamo Type from 1937 (the type prior to that was a very different pressed steel cover - sorry, we cannot help with that - although I have one fitted to one of my bikes) and was fitted to approximately the late 1940's/early 1950's, when it was replaced by the next variation of this dynamo - which was slightly longer, more powerful and (again) had a pressed steel cover.

There is a period line drawing of the end of the Lucas E3LM this cover was intended to fit - taken from a period 1950's Norton workshop manual - and as you can see it shows the same 'offset' screw retaining hole

Fitting Notes and update June 2023: This item had been out of stock for about 4 years now - but pleased to say it is now available again - I note that the moulding shape is slightly different from the proevious version. and it looks like it maty have been re-inforced around the wire connectors - maytbe to strengthen it, but the layout and fitment looks the same as the previous version.

I noted that the new version, as well as being strenghtened, has another slight difference over the original type (which is shown in one of the photographs as a comparison, alongside the version listed here)- the old type had two letters in the moulding where the new type do not - 'D' and 'F', which reference the original wiring.  Use this photograph as a reference when fitting to remind yourself which connector is which.

Reproduction Lucas E3H Dynamo Bakelite Cover - Centralised Screw: Each

Product no.: 1221 LU200354

In stock

£14.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Reproduction of the black bakelite cover fitted to Lucas Magdyno Dynalmo's of the E3H type - which are identifiable by having a centralised mounting screw hole (see photo). See listing for more detail.

Price is Each

This particular cover is identifiable to the Lucas E3H Dynamo type, because it had the mounting hole in the centre of the cover.  There was also another type of Lucas Dynamo of the same period, where the hole for the retaining screw was offset - and that offset type was more normal fitting for the Norton models - and is our Item 0616.  However, if you have another make of motorcycle fitted with this central screw (or a Norton model that does have this type) - then this cover is of that type - and now very difficult to obtain

Please check your own dynamo and ensure this is the correct (off centre  screw hole) for your dynamo before ordering.

Lucas Mag/Dyno Dynamo - Rubber Wiring Input Shroud (Each)

Product no.: 0428 LUC008

In stock

£4.80
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the distinctive kidney shaped rubber shroud that fits over the input wires on the pre-war and immediate post-war Lucas Dynamo - where those dynamos were fitted with a flat bakelite cover, on the Lucas Magdyno units.

Although I cannot be exact on when this type of 'short' dynamo with bakelite cover (as in one of the accompanyning photos) was fitted to Norton singles (and other marques using a similar Lucas Magdyno unit) - I believe it was approximately 1937 - 1951 (although this may vary be a year or so each way).

for these models, the two dynamo wires were screwed into the bakelite cover with a brown fibre plate holding them in, then this rubber shroud fitted over those wires so they were not exposed to the elements.  A very handy cover to have as most originals eventually perish

Lockwired/Slotted Housing Screws - Lucas Comp Type: K2FC/KNR1/Wader etc : Stainless Steel - Each

Product no.: 0860 Lucas015

In stock

£7.40
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These housing screws are CNC manufactured in stainless steel to the exact specification of the original housing screws fitted to Lucas competition magnetos of 1940's-1960's.

This particular type have a hex head (and ours are manufactured with the correct imperial hex dimensions - not metric!), two through holes for lockwire (of the correct hole dimension - so they look just like originals) and a scredriver slot.

This was the type fitted to many Lucas competition racing Magneto's - i.e. K2FC, K1FC, KNR1 and some Wader magnetos (and maybe some others we are less familiar with).

We know these are not cheap . . . but no apologies - they are a difficult and time consuming item to make, even on a CNC - the correct hex is milled onto round bar, then the lockwire holes and screwdriver slots are also milled in.  They do look very nice though and unlike original will not corrode as they are in Stainless Steel. They really set off a restored magneto.  Price is Each

Final Note:  The main photograph shows these screws fitted to an original Lucas NR1 road racing magneto - as fitted to some Manx Norton's in the late 1940's early '50's (as an alternative to a BTH mag which could also be fitted).  Although a rare magneto in this form, the NR1 racing magneto was most normally fitted with the same type screw, but without the screwdriver slot.  Although most prefer the slot for ease of fitting - we also make the same bolt without slot specifically for those that want absolute originality - see Item 0861 for this version.

The 3rd photograph shows an original Lucas bolt alongside the ones we supply - which was used as a pattern for the correct dimensions.  And the final 3 photographs show original Lucas magnetos of the type that would originally have had these bolts fitted - i.e. K2FC, KVFTT (Vincent), KNR1 (similar as fitted to AJS/Matchless trials and motocross singles?)
