Good quality NSK brand bearing.

Note:  when fitting new bearings in a magneto body, they should be fitted with a special star type paper washer that insulates the bearing from the body.  We also sell these gaskets, as shown in the photo - Item 0178

BTH KD1 Magneto (and Lucas?) - Bearing Insulator

Product no.: 0178 KD1 002

In stock

£3.80
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Insulator gasket to fit beahind BTH KD1 bearing. fits between bearing and housing. one required per bearing - required when building a magneto, to ensure it insulates bearing from body.

Price is each

This insulating gasket may also fit Lucas mags - if truthful I have not tried - so email to check for details if you are looking to change bearings on a Lucas magneto.

To fit, heat magneto bearing and old bearing should drop out (i.e. destroys old gasket).  Then place bearing in freezer, fold ears on bearing washer, place magneto body (or end casting) in oven to get it warm and then pull bearing out of freezer, attach to washer (you can use cyano glue or similar to ensure it sticks to face of new bearing) and very quickly push it into the bearing recess in the magneto body.  Use an aluminium drift with an inner shaft (or bolt screwed in, then head removed)with diameter just less than inner bore of bearing to feed the bearing down the body of the magneto when fitting, this can also be gently tapped when bearing fitted to ensure it is fully located home.

Norton Singles Wiring Diagrams Doc + Two Lucas/Norton Spare Parts Lists (3 Docs - A4 Format)

Product no.: 1213 WKM027

In stock

£14.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This listing is for a bundle of 3 seperate documents relating to the electrical fitment for Norton single cylinder road models from the early 1930's to 1962.  The first document shows a collection of original wiring diagrams for most Norton single cylinder variants, while the other two documents are A4 format facsimiles of Lucas Spare parts lists from the 1950s.  Together these 3 documents should be very useful for any restorer of a Norton single model about to tackle the electrical tasks, or just as a useful read and reference for the future.

Each document is printed on high quality A4 100gsm paper and come bundled together in a sealable plastic bag.

Details of the 3 documents are as follows:

Document 1: Norton Single Cylinder Models Wiring Diagrams - Early 1930's - 1962:

This is a RacingNorton publication giving a chronological list of the different Wiring Diagrams used on Norton singles from the early 1930s to 1962 (A4 format, 14 pages).  It consists of 8 seperate wiring diagrams - covering all the main wiring setups used on Norton models from the early 1930's, through to the last 1959-62 alternator models.  It even includes a particularly rare 'tank top panel' variant from 1939.

Each of these diagrams have been sourced from original period Norton maintenance and workshop publications in my possesion - some of which I have never seen available elsewhere.

As well as the wiring diagrams, we have also included a couple of pages showing period line drawings of various electrical fittings for Norton models - particularly, pictures of both the earlier 3 brush type Lucas Mag/Dyno and the later two brush type, as used in conjunction with the Lucas regulator unit (of which we sell a modern copy, like many of the electrical parts used on Norton models).

As a footnote on this document - like many Norton single enthusiasts, for many years I had made the assumption that there were only a couple of variants on the Norton single cylinder models wiring harness - It was only when I started to look through some of my rarer original Norton documentation when I realised there were so many variants, hence why I thought it useful to put this document together.  If nothing else - I hope you will find it provides an interesting read -showing the slight variations between the different drawings

Document 2: Lucas Spare Parts List for Norton Motorcycles 1956 - Facsimile

This useful 8 page document is an indispensible document to anyone restoring a mid 1950's Norton model - who wants to try and restore their electrical system to as close to original specification as possible.

The inside front cover shows a summary table by model type (i.e. OHV, Twins, SOHC models) - with each component area covered and parts numbers shown, and then each area (i.e. Ammeter, Horn, Horn Push, Magdyno etc) is shown in more detail - with a list of part numbers and variations - which even includes the variants of export models.

Most importantly - this particular Lucas spare parts list includes small but clear pictures of each of the main components fitted to the Norton models for that year - and invaluable visual aid to the restorer (many Lucas spare parts lists are parts numbers only).

This is quite a rare publication - but our version is taken from a particularly nice quality original I have had for many years, with any marks or faults removed (as with all our facsimiles).

Document 3: Norton Section Exerted from the - Lucas Spare Parts List for (all makes) Motorcyles 1936-57 - Facsimile

Again - this document is very useful for any restorer of Norton models - as it lists all the Lucas parts used on all Norton models from 1936-57, broken down into seperate lists by all the main model/variants, and then the different component part variations within each of those lists.

The original document was much larger than the 12 page 'exert' we have reproduced here - and it covered all major motorcycle makes over that 20 year period, that fitted Lucas electrical components - but as I was only able to borrow the document many years ago . . . I scanned the cover and index pages, and the pages that covered all the Norton models - which is what is included here.

Again, another rare and highly useful publication, unfortunately there is only one small picture section (showing a generic page, later in the documents - detailing different Lucas headlamp light switchs) - but the real value of this document is that for any Norton model over that period - it shows what magneto/headlight/switch/horn variants that were fitted to a Norton model type for a particular age range.

FYi for this facsimile - it is intended to cover the Norton model range only (which takes approximately 4 pages of the 12 pages) - but as part of capturing Norton models, it has also captured some Montgomery, New Imperial, OEC, OK Supreme and Panther models!

Final small point on this final document - as I scanned it many years ago - although it is printed on the same high quality paper as all our documents - some of the Lucas parts numbers are slightly faint - but all are legible, you might just need a small magnifying glass to pick some up!

This listing is for all 3 documents supplied together

Lucas M01L (Mag/Dyno) Face Cam Magneto - Contact Breaker Set

Product no.: 1012 LUC030

In stock

£24.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- High quality tungsten Contact Breaker Points Set to fit the popular Lucas M01L type Face Cam Mag/Dyno magneto, as fitted to most roadgoing Norton singles, from trusted UK supplier

These come from the same specialist supplier as provides our BTH  brushes and should fit most Lucas MagDyno units using the Face Cam type points operation.

Note: some of the earlier (1930's) Lucas MagDyno units, although looking similar to the later units, were of the none-faceplate points variety (I have a 1936 Lucas Magdyno unit on one of my Inters, and this uses cam ring type points).  Please check which points your magdyno use before ordering - these are the face-cam type points, as shown in the original Norton Workshop Manual line drawing from the early 1950's.  If you require the other (cam ring) type points - contact us on sales@racingvincent.co.uk as we may also be able to obtain that type as well by special order

Lucas M01L (Mag/Dyno) and other Lucas Magnetos -HT Pickup Brush and Spring - Each

Product no.: 1219 LUC037

In stock

£5.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are the rectangular brushes fitted to the Lucas E3 and E3L Dynamo unit that sits atop the Lucas Magdyno unit, fitted to most Norton Single Cylinder roadgoing models.  These brushes are to fit the E3(L) 2 brush type dynamo, fitted to Norton models from 1937 onwards.

Price is Per Pair

Background:

The Lucas E3 (two brush) type dynamo was fitted to Norton single cylinder models from 1937 onwards.  These brushes are to fit that model.  The dynamo looks as shown in the last photo in this listing, and as you can see the brushes are accessable, after releasing the end cover, and (if memory serves me right), - access to the brushes is easier if the tin circular end cover is also removed.  Sometime in the late 1940's/early 1950's this dynamo type was upgraded to a slightly more powerful and longer unit (which I believe was when it was then called the E3L) - identifiable by having a distinctive shaped encapsulating single piece pressed cover - these brushes should also fit that dynamo type.

The brushes are held in by circular coil springs (Part J in the picture) which can easily be held back with a small screwdriver to allow the old brushes to be removed and checked.  It is also a good idea to check the commutator (copper segnments that the brushes push against), to check for graphite build up or corrosion - but you need to be extremely careful not to damage these segments when cleaning them.

Note: Prior to 1937, the Lucas dynamo was a 3 Brush unit - and I do not believe these brushes will fit that earlier unit.  However, you can email me on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk if you have an earier unit - as in the future I may be trying to obtain the brushes for that earlier type.

Also - if you require more information on the different electrical units fitted to Norton single cylinder models, or the different wiring harnesses fitted over the lifetime of the different single cylinder models - we now produce a set of 3 facsimile items showing Lucas parts and the different wiring diagrams - See Item 1213 (use our Search function in the left sidebar - and enter the number 1213).

Lucas M01L (Mag/Dyno) -Earthing Brush and Spring - Each

Product no.: 1220 LUC038

In stock

£5.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This listing is for the (armature) Earthing Brush and spring fitted to those Lucas Magdyno M01L magnetos that were fitted with earthing brushes - i.e. with a brass earthing side screw, as shown in the accompanyning photos.

Price is for brush and spring.

Note - The Lucas Magdyno unit was made for many years and fitted to numerous motorcycle makes and models.  I am not the best expert - but I led to understand that an earthing screw was not fitted to all Magdyno models - but it was fitted to a number of M01L magnetos fitted to Norton single cylinder models.  The accompanyning photos shows an original Lucas C/W rotation (1938-47 type only) M01L magneto - and as you can see it is fitted with a brass earthing screw at the side of the magneto body.  It is this type of magneto this earthing bruss and spring are intended to fit.

Note:  we also sell a brass Earthing screw to fit the later K2F twin cylinder magneto (see Item 1209).  It should be noted that the K2F brass earthing screw will not fit this type of M01L magneto - although they look visually similar, the M01L earthing screw has a different thread (and as I update this listing in January 2024, we do not offer the M01L earthing screw yet).

Lucas Magdyno M01l, NR1 and K2FC - HT Pickup Gasket - Each

Product no.: 0315 2948

In stock

£2.90
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the thick gasket that fits underneath the HT pickup fitted to most Lucas Magdyno magnetos, as well as Lucas NR1 and K1F/K2FC/KVFTT competition magnetos.

These are high quality UK manufactured gaskts from our specialist gasket manufacturer.

Price is Each.

As well as fitting most Lucas Magdyno units (please check before ordering - I believe some earlier units may have used a different style pickup) - this gasket was also fitted to to Lucas NR1, NR1 Wader and K1F/K2FC/KVFTT competition magnetos (NR1 road racing magnetos are very rare, but were as fitted to some late Gardengate and early Featherbed Manx Nortons - see photo of one attached, which is going to be fitted to my 600 sidecar Manx).  However - the more normal NR1 magneto was the Wader type (as fitted to many British trials bikes) - which this gasket should also fit.
