Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - Complete Kit of 1mm/2mm/3mm/5mm Felt + White Marker Pen

Product no.: 0838 Felt11

In stock

£32.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This Felt seal making kit consists of a variety of the thickness of 100% Black Wool Felt offered in the other listings + a white (PAINT) marker pen which is ideal for the purpose of marking out the washer/seal to be made before cutting.

The kit consists of the following felt items, all of which are also offered as individual items:

1 x Item 0831: 1mm thickness 510mm x 410mm Felt Sheet

1 x Item 0834: 2mm thickness 310mm x 250mm Felt Sheet

1 x Item 0835: 3mm thickness 310mm x 250mm Felt Sheet

1 x Item 0837: 5mm thickness (Grey) 250mm x 150mm Felt Patch

1 x White (PAINT) Marker Pen (not sold seperately)

This kit provides 4 thicknesses of 100% Wool black felt, which should cover most applications for making those special seals/gaskets/seat underlay which are sometimes necessary as part of a classic bike restoration.  Please read the individual listings for the normal usage for each thickness - but buying as a kit, as well as being very useful, provides a small saving over buying each individually.

Why not ask Santa or a loved one for the kit if they are struggling to think what to buy you for Xmas!

As part of motorcycle restoration I have found 3 common usages of felt sheet, which are:

1: Soaking up Excess Oil - i.e. cambox's and primary chain rungs:

Many years ago it was common to see wool felt used on competition bikes in areas where oil leaked - to soak up that excess oil.  Particularly, for SOHC and DOHC Norton's, I have seen felt used around the underneath of cambox's, to help soak up oil leaking from the cambox. If you are one of those lucky people whose cambox never leaks, then this may not be required - but if like the rest of us (!) your cambox has some leaking, this thin sheet can be very useful for soaking up the oil and helping prevent it leaking over the rest of the engine.  Being wool (unlike man made fibres) it does not melt when hot and stays absorbent - then periodically the felt can be removed, squeezed and washed before placing back.  I Will leave it to you how you place it - but it in the past I have fitted it under cambox's similar to in the picture - wrapped into a roll and placed between springs under the cambox.

Likewise - if you have a bike with an open primary chain (or even the final drive chain) - it used to be common to see felt wrapped around a lower frame (or swingarm) tube, then lockwired, to soak up the worst of chain oil

2: Underlay for Seats and Saddles:

If you are restoring an original seat or saddle - wool felt is an excellent material to place over the steel base, or springs, before fitting foam or covers.  Particularly with the older saddles - it is a good idea to fit felt sheet over the springs before fitting the cover - to stop the springs chaffing the cover.  This thin 1mm felt sheet is the ideal material for doing this

This item (0831) is the bigger sheet size being 510mm x 410mm, which should be enough to cover most common size saddles - see photograph for this listing.  We also sell a smaller sheet (Item 0832) if only a smaller patch required

 3: Felt Washer and Seals:

The normal use for wool felt on classic motorcycle is for making felt washers and seals.  Normally felt seals are made from thicker material - and you will see we also sell 2mm, 3mm and 6mm felt for this purpose

All our felts are high quality 100% Wool from a reputable UK source.  I use the same felt for my own restorations.  Email on our sales email if you require other lengths or thicknesses (or colours!), we may be able to provide them. They are individually packed in sealable bags to keep the material clean until ready to use

Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - 1mm Black Wool - 440mm x 250xmm Sheet

Product no.: 0832 Felt05

£5.50

1mm thick, 100% Wool Black Felt sheet -  Med 440mm x 250mm size.  This is 1mm (thin) pure wool felt material - very useful for wrapping around cambox area, lower primary chain rungs or undercovering under saddles and seats.  It can also be used for thin felt washers.  Price per sheet

This thin felt sheet has 3 common usages:

1: Soaking up Excess Oil - i.e. cambox's and primary chain rungs:

Many years ago it was common to see wool felt used on competition bikes in areas where oil leaked - to soak up that excess oil.  Particularly, for SOHC and DOHC Norton's, I have seen felt used around the underneath of cambox's, to help soak up oil leaking from the cambox. Note: This item (0832) is the smaller sheet size being 440mm x 250mm, which is not big enough to cover a normal size motorcycle saddle set of springs.  If you are trying to underlay a full size saddle with a single piece of felt, we recommend that you look at our larger piece of 1mm felt which is item 0831.

 3: Felt Washer and Seals:

The normal use for wool felt on classic motorcycle is for making felt washers and seals.  Normally felt seals are made from thicker material - and you will see we also sell 2mm, 3mm and 6mm felt for this purpose, however, this thin 1mm felt can be useful if you have an open bearing that is weeping (i.e. drum brake area) and there is only  a limited gap to fit a washer

All our felts are high quality 100% Wool from a reputable UK source.  I use the same felt for my own restorations.  Email on our sales email if you require other lengths or thicknesses (or colours!), we may be able to provide them. They are individually packed in sealable bags to keep the material clean until ready to use

Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - 2mm Black Wool - 300mm x 250xmm Sheet

Product no.: 0834 Felt06

Not in stock

£6.30
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

2mm thick, 100% Wool Black Felt sheet - 300mm x 250mm size.  This is 2mm (medium thickness) pure wool felt material - very useful for slim felt washers, or absorbent material for wrapping around cambox area, lower primary chain rungs or undercovering under seats and saddles.  Price per sheet

This medium thickness felt sheet can be used for making slim felt seals and washers.  However, like the thin 1mm sheet we also sell (item 0831 and 0832) it can also be used as material for soaking up excess oil around cambox's, but being thicker than the 1mm sheet, is less flexible for rolling up into rolls for this purpose (and being thicker is obviously more expensive).  However I have used all thicknesses for this purpose - so will leave with you to decide.

With this in mind I have duplicated the information from the 1mm felt sheet listing below (i.e. item 0831 and 0832) for soaking up oil, as well as other uses for this felt:

We suggest the 1mm sheet (item 0831 and 0832) is good for underlay if restoring original seats and saddles.  This 2mm felt sheet is also useful for the same purpose - particularly in areas which may be susceptable to heavy wear and rubbing

 3: Felt Washer and Seals:

The normal use for wool felt on classic motorcycle is for making felt washers and seals.  This 2mm thickness material is useful for making thin/medium thickness felt washers - i.e to cover open bearings where grease/oil may escape (i.e. wheel bearings

All our felts are high quality 100% Wool from a reputable UK source.  I use the same felt for my own restorations.  Email on our sales email if you require other lengths or thicknesses (or colours!), we may be able to provide them. They are individually packed in sealable bags to keep the material clean until ready to use

Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - 3mm Black Wool - 300mm x 250xmm Sheet

Product no.: 0835 Felt08

In stock

£8.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

3mm thick, 100% Wool Black Felt sheet - 300mm x 250mm size.  This is 3mm (thicker variety) pure wool felt material - very useful for making felt washers and seals of the type often covering wheel bearings or around primary chaincases, or other areas where you want to stop seeping of oil and grease.  This material allows you to cut washers and seals to the size you require.  Price per sheet

This 3mm thick felt material is the type I most often use for making felt seals and bearings - it being the thickest commercially available wool felt I have been able to find, and a similar thickness to many original motorcycle felt washers.  Being 100% wool, and of a dense weave, it is excellent for retaining grease/oil etc, as well as being hard wearing and heat resistent - which many man made materials are not.

This size of sheet will allow you to make a large quantity of felt seals and is useful if you restore multiple bikes.  If you only need to make a specific felt seal or a couple of seals, we also sell a smaller size of this 3mm sheet - Item 0836

Felt seals are rarely seen in the modern world of motorcycles - but they were very commonly fitted on older motorcycles - not just on bearings, but any area where there may be a likelyhood of oil seeping out, this felt helping to stop constant drips on the floor, or dirt getting into bearing areas.  It also has the advantage of being able to be cleaned or washed out with degreasant rather than throwing away.

We do sell a few purpose made felt washers - but do to the cost of having custom made washer cutteres made - it is more economical to buy a sheet of wool felt and cut them to size when needed - this material is ideal for this. In the accompanying photos I show how I normally cut them.  First of all I use a suitable marker pen and find it easiest for round washer seals to just keep a variety of washers and coins of various thicknesses.  I then draw around the circumference of an appropriately sized washer to mark out the shape.  I then use good quality heavy duty scissors - I have found those like in the photograph best, I think these are the type used by clothing makers.  Just work slowly and carefully and keep the felt as close to the pivot point of the blades to give the sharpest cut.  To cut the centre out, I first fold the washer in half, and make a nick that the sharp scissor blade can fit through - then I start in the middle and work slowly out in a spiral fashion.  Finally, I trim the outer circumference of the washer to make it as round as possible - I find turning it over makes it easier to remove any pointy bits and ensures a nice round profile.

I think using this good quality black felt adds an original touch to restorations - so always keep a variety of thicknesses for this purpose.

All our felts are high quality 100% Wool from a reputable UK source.  I use the same felt for my own restorations.  Email on our sales email if you require other lengths or thicknesses (or colours!), we may be able to provide them. They are individually packed in sealable bags to keep the material clean until ready to use

Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - 3mm Black Wool - 100mm x 80xmm Patch

Product no.: 0836 Felt09

£2.50

3mm thick, 100% Wool Black Felt sheet - 180mm x 80mm size.  This is 3mm (thicker variety) pure wool felt material - very useful for making felt washers and seals of the type often covering wheel bearings or around primary chaincases, or other areas where you want to stop seeping of oil and grease.  This is a smaller section of material - useful if you only have a a few washers to make.  Price is per patch

This item is for just a smaller section of material - which is useful if you only need to create one or two seals or washers.  However, if you wish to make further seals in the future I would recommend you look at Item 0835, which is a larger section of the same material and more economical . .  . also handy - if like me, you end up making a couple of mistakes!

Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - 5mm Grey Wool - 250mm x 150xmm Sheet

Product no.: 0837 Felt10

In stock

£8.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

5mm thick, 100% Wool Grey Felt sheet - 250mm x 150mm size.  This is a much thicker felt than the other types we offer and is excellent for those areas where a really thick felt is required - i.e.steering head bearings or swinging arm bearing areas - or special wheel bearing applications, where you need to cut your own custom size.

Price is per sheet

For some applications I have found it very useful to make washers or seals from really thick felt - but finding felt sheet of this 5mm thickness is very difficult.  As far as I am aware this is the thickest pure wool felt commercially available (but is only available in Grey, we cannot get this thickness in black).

It is extremly useful if you are trying to make large 'cvustom sized' felt seals - i.e. around frame/fork head races, or swinging arm ends - to stop dirt and ingress entering these areas.

This material is best quality pure wool felt from a reputable UK manufacturer (we also sell the same size sheet in our 0838 Full Felt kits).

All our felts are high quality 100% Wool from a reputable UK source.  I use the same felt for my own restorations.  Email on our sales email if you require other lengths or thicknesses (or colours!), we may be able to provide them. Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - 1mm Black Wool - 510mm x 410xmm Sheet

Product no.: 0831 Felt04

In stock

£10.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

1mm thick, 100% Wool Black Felt sheet - large 510mm x 410mm size.

Felt Wool Gasket/Seal Material - 6mm Black Wool - 100mm x 80xmm Patch

Product no.: 0837b Felt12

In stock

£5.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

6mm thick, 100% Wool Black Felt sheet - 180mm x 80mm size.  This is a non-standard thickness felt that we have to make using two 3mm felt patch's together. Price is per patch

We used to provide these 'composite' patch's before we were able to obtain 5mm wool felt (Item 0837), for use where thick felt was required.- we made this exta thick type - by joining two layers of black 3mm felt together as a composite, using contact adhesive to hold them together.  This provded a really nice thick felt, but was very labour intensive to manufacture.

Update Aug 2022: As we are now able to provide 5mm thick grey felt (virtually as this as this), we will not be continuing to offer this type once the current stock of patch's have gone - but as at this time we still have some in stock.

I use this thickness of material when wanting to make felt seals for areas susceptible to dirt and debris getting in - two obvious areas being Steering head bearing areas (where often there is a slight gap between upper and lower races) or to protect the gap at the end of swinging arms - where road debris can get in - however I am sure there are other areas as well.  In the accompanying photos you will see my Douglas 2 3/4hp project build, where I have assembled the fork steering head bearings with felt seals made from the same 6mm material as listed here.

Sorry these patch's are not cheap, but not easy to make and time consuming.

With these 6mm patch's I take great care to ensure they are kept clean in the process of gluing, but inevitably there may occasionally be a  smudge of glue around the edges - but this does not detract in any way from the main felt area, or purpose - otherwise I would reject them
