This is the timing Side left hand thread mainshaft nut - Fits all SOHC engines, but this being a slightly 'weight reduced' version - as sometimes found fitted to racing versions of these engines - i.e. Model 30M/40M or SOHC Manx models
These nuts follow the original pattern - being a shouldered, left hand nut. It is manufactured in high tensile steel, and as this is no longer easy to obtain, we mill the hex to the correct Imperial Hex, as per original. This 'wasted' type has an additional recess at the front of the nut to reduce a bit more weight - and I have seen similar ones sometimes fitted to original Manx engines - so we decided to copy it for those that like to save every bit of weight!

Final photograph shows the nut fitted to end of crankshaft in the bevel chamber - where it retains the main bevel gear and oil pump drive gear. In this case it is fitted to a magnesium 30M (racing) engine. FYI - it is often difficult to see clearly in the confined space of the bevel chamber - and it is tightening this nut, and shimming behind the bevel gear that will give you the final mesh of the bevel gears (in conjunction with the vertical bevel) - as a hint, you may find it easier to assemble these parts 'dry' when shimming - as it is much easier to hear any 'clicking' of the gears when backlash is present. You can email us if you require any more information on this assembly process - it is one of the more dificult, but necessary assembly tasks on this engine type.
