- High quality cadmium plated brass main/pilot jet holder to fit both original Amal TT and RN competition carburetters - Nicely finished with clean crisp machining.

These jet holder blocks are (CNC) machined to the same dimensions to the original Amal TT and RN jet body and are excellent quality, with a nice satin nickel plate finish - just like the original items, which are so often chewed by errant spanners.  Fitted with our lockwired bottom nuts (Item 0151) and new red fibre washers, they totally transform the look of your original carburettor, and allow for proper tightening of this important component, to prevent leaking and air escape.

Fitment:  This jet block holds the pilot jet in the topmost part and the main jet in the bottom part, before screwing on the bottom nut.  It also retains the floatchamber or (remote) floatchamber banjo - therefore it is important for this component to be in good condition and be fitted with good quality washers (which we also offer in the same section).  Original items often get chewed and make jet changing or tightening of the float chamber difficult - these have excellent crisp hex's with the correct Whit spanner sizes as original and make those tasks much easier and more efficient

- Full washer kit to fit original Amal TT and RN carburettors

This set consists of flange brown paper washer (generic diameter), two washers for jet block body (the black and smaller fibre washer) and 4 washers to fit the banjo's used on TT and Amal RN carbs.

Note; some TT carbs do not require all 4 of the larger banjo washers - but our kits come with four, so they will fit those carbs using a seperate banjo on the floatchamber, as well as the banjo of the float fitting to the main carb body jet holder.

(note dependent on batch, sometimes the banjo washers are all four of the same type, while other kits have two sets of 2 slightly different washers - but for both types the banjo washers are high quality and all fit the banjo seal exactly), see first and second photos.

Original Amal TT/RN/GP Main Jets - Flat Hex Racing Type - All Sizes (Petrol and Alchohol)

Product no.: 0901 TT/RN_Orig

These are genuine (old stock) Amal Racing Type main jets - of the type originally supplied for Amal TT/RN/GP racing carburettors.

They are easily identifiable as being the original racing Amal TT/RN type - because the hex part of the jet is uninterupted along its entire length, while the more common later Amal main jets (fitted to all road and competition carbs) had an indented section 2/3 along the jet, which is where the size is stamped.

On these earlier racing jets the main jet size is stamped in slightly larger numerals along one edge of the hex, as can be seen in the accompanyning photographs.  Many of these jets are in the much larger sizes only fitted to racing carbs.  It should be noted, that the later indented type can be fitted to Amal TT, RN and GP carburettors (and jet size should be the same calibration for both) - but out of preference, many people like to fit these original racing jets if available

As well as the original TT/RN (straight hex) jets, in the same collection were a number of original Amal main jets of the later 'indented hex' design, which were manufactured later for all carb types - including Monobloc and Concentric.  These jets are original Amal (I would between 30 - 50 years old), but similar to the type available new today which we also sell - Item 0153.  Again, the table below shows this 3rd type of original Amal jet (0901_3) - state which size when ordering. All jets of this type are interchangeable with the original 'straight hex' racing type, and there are actually some very small sizes - going down to a very small 050 size.

Price is for a single jet, please state which size you require in the comment section when placing order.

We have sub-divided the jets into 3 types:

0901_1 : Original RN/TT 'Straight hex' type: Size from 280 - 640 (mainly petrol)

0901_2 : Original RN/TT 'Straight hex' type: Size from 650 - 1900 (mainly alchohol/methanol.

0901_3 : Original later Amal 'Indented hex' type: Various Sizes - see table below.

The larger TT/RN jets are slightly more expensive due to their rarity.

A Table of all available jet sizes is shown at the bottom of this listing (but apologies if not not kept fully up to date as jets sell).

Background on these jets:  A short time ago I was fortunate to be offered this large collection of original main jets from an ex-racer who was clearly serious about setting his carburettors up correctly (I know he raced both Manx and Gold Star models) - as the collecton was kept in a large box, split into sub-sections by jet size, ranging from approximately 280 up to the largest methanol/alchohol sizes.

All jets are in good original, unmolested condition - and some have clearly never been fitted (i.e. New Old Stock), because they still have the original wire/lead spot they were supplied with when new.

If you are setting up a TT, RN or GP carburettor it is always a good idea to keep a selection of jets of various sizes - so that you can vary the jetting, to get the ideal jet for your state of tune/fuel.  Doing any form of engine tuning, changing fuel (or even ambient track temperature on a finely tuned engine) can make a difference.  If you are not sure how to tune your Amal racing carburettor for the correct Main Jet/Needle Jet/Slide/Needle settings, then in our Facsimile/Catalog section we offer a facsimile that includes original Amal information how to do this.

As a general rule of thumb - I have found that most competition bikes using Amal TT/RN on petrol tend to use main jet sizes up to a @ 650 main jet (dependent on cc/state of tune), while those bikes running on methanol or alchohol use much bigger jets from 550 all the way up to a (massive) 1900.  These original larger jets are now very uncommon to find - and once these are gone I doubt I will be offering any more!

TT (and RN) Float Chamber Needle (For Type 14 TT Alloy Float Chambers) - Each

Product no.: 0161 14/245

In stock

£23.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Float Chamber needle of Type 14/245 - to fit original Amal TT, RN and some GP Type alloy 14 float chambers, as fitted to most TT and RN carbs of late 1930's to mid 50s period, where an alloy float chamber was fitted.  Manufactured to the original design.

July 2023: New batch - back in stock

Price is Each.

These float needles are of the type fitted to most alloy Amal competition TT, RN and GP float chambers (as per the photos) of the late 1930's through the 1950's - and this type are easily identifiable because of the larger bottom coniclal section at the bottom of the needle (to allow a larger flow of fuel) than the early Type 14 needle - which was fitted to earlier TT carbs and roadgoing Amal 276/289 type carbs (our Item 0613),

As well as the larger cone on this type of needle (which is relieved underneath, as per the original design), you will see it is also 'wasted', i.e. of thinner section, along its shaft, and also has a small hole close to the float clip groove - all these features are faithfully replicated from the original design.

If you are not sure if your TT/RN/GP carburettor requires this type of float needle - then look closely at the float chamber in these photographs - you will see it is of light alloy manufacture (i.e. not the earlier 1930's brass TT design, or the roadgoing 'pewter' style 276/289 float chamber - which normally had 'Amal' cast into the side), but it also has a large brass/plated hex nut screwed into the bottom of the floatchamber, where the hex is 1.100" across the flats - this larger nut with the internal float needle seat is the the large flow type, designed for this type of float needle.

These needles are manufactured just as the original Amal design, and designed to take the standard Amal copper float (not modern plastic floats, which have a clip notch in a slightly different position).

If you are wondering why this original type of needle had a hole in it - we believe this was because when used on period competition GP bikes (i.e. Manx Nortons at the Isle of Man TT), it was possible with long use and vibration for the float spring clip to come adrift from the notch.  Therefore, as additional insurance - original TT/RN copper floats for this type of floatchamber had a small hole on the brass tube that protruded above the float - so it was possible to fit split pin.  You will see in one of the pictures - when the genuine Amal RN floatchamber (which I have had in my possession for many years) was stripped - it was found to still have the original crossdrilled float and needle in-situ, and a split pin still fitted!

It is up to each owner to decide if they wish to fit a split-pin (this is the only carb I have ever found with one still fitted!) - but these needles replicate that original design.  And of course - it is quite rare these days to find carburettors which still have all their original parts, so you may find that your (copper) float does not have the required drilling to the small brass tube that protrudes up from the float - look side onat the float, and you should see a brass tube that the steel spring clip sits on top of - original racing floats normallly have cross drill there for the split pin.

It is not unusual for the original needles to get worn, resulting in a groove around the conical area - which can affect smooth running and sometimes cause flooding - hence why fitting a replacement will often restore performance to original spec

Other Background Information:

A final point on float chambers to fit Amal TT and RN carburettors, and those fitted to Norton SOHC motorcycles:  the TT carburettor had a variety of float chambers available - in the second photographs is a 'Remote' type, with mounting bracket to the frame and also a fixed height float chamber, on the right.  The fixed chamber had the advantage that providing you had the correct type fitted - it would automatically set the fuel at the correct height. However, the remote float chamber had the benefit that it did allow some adjustment of height - I used to prefer the remote type for short circuit racing using methanol, and set the height so that if on level ground the bike was tipped (approximately) 15 degrees off centre towards the engine timing side, then fuel would dribble from the bottom of the air slide casting.  However - if dribbling when the bike is upright . . . it is flooding!

If intending to use a 'fixed' type float chamber - the correct type for SOHC Nortons are 'Left mounting' 15 degree offset float chambers - if you are not sure what yours is - look underneath, there should be a number stamped on it - 0 / 7 / 15 etc, indicating the degrees off upright.  The fixed type in the photo showing two floats is a 15 degree offset TT float chamber - but is actually a 'Right mounting' type - i.e. the float chamber sits on the right of the carburettor body, and is actually intended for my Vincent Grey Flash, not a Norton!  Not surprisingly, the 15 degree Left Mounting type are probably the rarest to find - bad luck for us needing one for our next cammy Norton project!

14/024 Float Needle for Amal 276 and early TT Floatchambers

Product no.: 0613 14_024

In stock

£17.00
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Float needle to fit the Amal 276 type floatchambers and the early (mainly pre-war) type floatchamber.  Note: these float needles are of modified design to the original, with two grooves - which allows them to be used with the orginal copper floats (which use the groove furthest away from the cone) and the modern plastic type floats (which use the lower groove, closest to the cone)

Background: Amal TT (and RN) carburettors are more commonly fitted with Type 14 alloy TT floatchamber, which is identifiable by having a large Hex bottom feed/banjo, and used a different (wider at the base of the conical section) float needle to the one shown here.  To look at a float chamber of that later type - see our Item 0163.

However, earier TT carburettor's, particularly many of those fitted to SOHC Norton models pre-war used the earlier TT type float chamber, which was similar in build to the Amal 276 float chamber (road not racing), and both of these used the float needle shown here.  If you are unsure - the widest part of the cone for this needl2 is @0.222" diameter at the widest part of the cone.  The later competition type TT/RN floatchambers (normally in alloy) are wider than this - and are sold as item 0161.

This needle was also fitted to the road type Amal 276 float chamber, which used the standard pewter type alloy and had 'Amal' logo cast onto its body.  The pre-war type Amal TT float chamber was a different material, and did not have the 'Amal' logo on it.  In the accompanying last photograph is a picture of two original float chambers - on the left is a standard Amal 276 float chamber, with 'Amal' cast in side, on the right is a genuine early TT float chamber - which is different material to the 276 type.  As can be seen though, both types use the same bottom union and this type of float needle (note the banjo of the TT carb is of smaller centre diameter than the later TT Type 14 float chamber shown in Item listing 161).

NEW July 2023:  We are now able to offer these copper floats - to fit original Amal carburettors fitted with the Type 14 Float chamber - this include roadgoing Amal Type 76, 276 and 289 carburettors and competition Amal TT and RN carburettors.  These floats are manufactured in the same style as original Amal floats - with two spun copper halfs, soldered in the middle - and a brass tube running through the centre of a float, with a 'press spring' at the top.  See detail listing for more information.

Price is Each

Carb Type Fitted To:

These floats are intended for 'Type 14' Amal Float Chambers - i.e. carburettors with seperate float chambers - pre-Monobloc.  For roadgoing models - Type 14 floatchambers were fitted to a variety of Amal carburettors - but predominantly Type 76, Type 276 and Type 289 carburettors (as fitted to most roadgoing Norton OHV and SV models from the 1930's through to the mid 1950's, as well as many other marques)

The same style of float were also fitted to most Amal TT and Amal RN competition carburettors, as well as Type 29 Track carbs.  Earlier Amal TT/RN carbs (normally pre-war) used a brass bodied float chamber - with the smaller Type 14 needle, also used on road going floats (our Item 0161), while later competition models used the alloy floatchamber with larger conical float needle (our item 0613).  However both varieties of float chambers used this type of copper float.

See also the line drawing of the 1948 Norton Catalog which shows Type 276 road carb, Amal TT on the Norton International (using smaller Type 14 needle), and Amal RN fitted to the Manx Models (using larger float needle) - all employing this style of Type 14 Float.

Please note that some later original Amal TT and RN floats had an additional small hole drilled cross-wise in the top of the brass centre tube, between the top and bottom of the steel top spring - this was to allow the added security of a split pin on highly stressed racing models on long races.  We do not try an replicate this on our floats

Background and Manufacture:

These floats are manufactured in the same way as the original Amal Type 14 Floats - and in one of the photos is a picture of our float alongside a genuine 'New Old Stock' Amal float from the 1950's/60's as a comparison.  As you can see the general construction is the same - the copper float is manufactured in two halfs - with a lipped seam in the middle.  There is also a brass tube running through the centre of the float, which sticks proud of the copper float, and which a (spring steel) needle spring fits over.  Finally a small brass rib fits over the spring and brass tube, and is soldered to the top of the copper float, to ensure the spring is retained.  All this is replicated from the original float design.

We are currently making these floats in small batch's - and each float has a float needle fitted after manufacture, to ensure it sits at the same height as original.  We also 'Leak' test each float in a tank of water after soldering - where it is left for a number of hours, to ensure it does not leak.

Final Note:

The process to manufacture and solder these floats is extremely labour intensive and time consuming - the soldering process is done by hand, and has taken a considerable time to find the most efficient method (as well as having 'written off' numerous trial floats in setting this up!).  Although each float is cleaned and lightly linished after soldering (as per the photos) - it is inevitable that they may have tiny soldering or manufacturing marks or the slightest of flats in places . . . this is almost inevitable in the manual process of soldering up, but we do our very best to ensure each is as close to perfect, and is of course rejected if dented or leaking.

Please bear this in mind when ordering - but remember we give a full money back guarantee if not satisfied (other than postage) - providing not fitted to a carb, and returned in the original packaging as sent.

Finally - we are only making these floats in small quantities, and may not always have them in stock.  If this is the case (the Stock bar will show in RED if out of stock), you can email on sales@racingvincent.co.uk - if you are less fussy, as we do have a small quantity of rejected '2n'ds' - these will be fully functional, but are likely to have a small cosmetic fault - i.e. we have found the spun copper float dents extremely easily - just as originals did!
