14/024 Float Needle for Amal 276 and early TT Floatchambers

Float needle to fit the Amal 276 type floatchambers and the early (mainly pre-war) type floatchamber.  Note: these float needles are of modified design to the original, with two grooves - which allows them to be used with the orginal copper floats (which use the groove furthest away from the cone) and the modern plastic type floats (which use the lower groove, closest to the cone)

Background: Amal TT (and RN) carburettors are more commonly fitted with Type 14 alloy TT floatchamber, which is identifiable by having a large Hex bottom feed/banjo, and used a different (wider at the base of the conical section) float needle to the one shown here.  To look at a float chamber of that later type - see our Item 0163.

However, earier TT carburettor's, particularly many of those fitted to SOHC Norton models pre-war used the earlier TT type float chamber, which was similar in build to the Amal 276 float chamber (road not racing), and both of these used the float needle shown here.  If you are unsure - the widest part of the cone for this needl2 is @0.222" diameter at the widest part of the cone.  The later competition type TT/RN floatchambers (normally in alloy) are wider than this - and are sold as item 0161.

This needle was also fitted to the road type Amal 276 float chamber, which used the standard pewter type alloy and had 'Amal' logo cast onto its body.  The pre-war type Amal TT float chamber was a different material, and did not have the 'Amal' logo on it.  In the accompanying last photograph is a picture of two original float chambers - on the left is a standard Amal 276 float chamber, with 'Amal' cast in side, on the right is a genuine early TT float chamber - which is different material to the 276 type.  As can be seen though, both types use the same bottom union and this type of float needle (note the banjo of the TT carb is of smaller centre diameter than the later TT Type 14 float chamber shown in Item listing 161).

This is the spring of the correct dimensions to fit the Amal TT/RN/GP air adjuster assembly.  However, It is also of the type shown fitted to earlier Amal TT and RN carburettors, before the introduction of conical springs on competition carburettors. 

These are high quality UK manufactured (plated) springs, of similar strength to originals.  We use them in our Air Adjuster kits.

Earlier TT and RN Carburettor Background:

As well as being of the type fitted to the competition air assembly - this type of spring were also of the type that were found fitted to Amal TT and RN carburettors before the introduction of the more commonly found conical spring (which we sell - Item 0144).  They fit neatly in the recess at the top of the TT/RN carb top, where the original type cable adjuster fitted - this being a slightly larger hole than later TT/RN/GP carbs, which had a smaller adjuster and used the later conical spring.

Another give away if you are not sure which type of spring your original TT/RN throttle slide would have been fitted with - the top of the earlier throttle slides also had a small recess in the top of the cable holder area, to fit the spring - and as you can see in the accompanyning photograph - our springs fit exactly in that rececss (the photograph shows an original early RN slide).  Later slides had a slight recess around the top of the slide to fit the later conical spring (and all our replacement TT and RN slides have this recess for the conical spring).

However, it must be noted that although useful to use for this purpose - you must be comfortable yourself that you choose a spring (either conical or straight type like this item) that is of satisfactory strength to ensure the slide will close fully.  Different people have their own preference on throttle spring strength - some people do not like to have to exert a lot of effort to open the throttle - but it is important to adjust any throttle spring to ensure the throttle will close fully if you take your hand off the twistgrip.  In the past I have adjusted the length of the spring a small amount - to ensure that the throttle will easily close fully once I have let go of the twistgrip.

Note, some people prefer the conical throttle spring anyway, and retro fit those to the earlier carbs - personal choice, but always make sure they are fitted correctly and the throttle can close and open fully

Distinctive leaf spring that fits against Knurled pilot needle on Amal TT, RN and GP carburettors

These leaf springs fit both the early pre-war and later 'straight knurl' type pilot jets (which we also sell - Item 0154 for TT and RN carbs, Item 0293 for GP carbs) and ensure they do not come loose or change adjustment in competition through vibration.  Originals are often missing or in poor condition.  These have been specially made by us in black finished spring steel and identical to the original pattern.

In the accompanying photographs you can see two Amal RN carburettors (long neck versions as originally fitted to Manx Nortons) - the carb on the left is fitted with the earlier (pre-war style) pilot adjuster and the carb on teh right shows the later 'straight knurl' type adjuster fitted to later TT/RN carbs and GP carbls . . . all are fitted with the spring sold here.

We keep these sprayed in Duck Oil to prevent rusting in storage - sorry not cheap, but the pattern work to have these springs made was not cheap!

Tufnol spacer flange to fit between cylinder head and 'flange' type carburettors - i.e. Amal TT/RN, Monobloc and Concentric carbs.  This listing is for a 28mm bore spacer, 6mm wide.  

These 6mm thick tufnol type spacer flanges were a common fitment on many models fitted with Amal flange fitting carbs.  We keep two bore sizes in stock:

- 28mm bore - which equates to 1.102" in imperial size and very similar to the 1 3/32" (1.093") bore fitted to many Norton 350cc SOHC models (this Item listing 0844a)

- 30mm bore - which equates to 1.181" in imperial size and is somewhere between the 1 5/32" (1.156") bore and 1 3/16" (1.1875") large bore TT carbs, commonly fitted to 500cc Norton racing singles - for this see Item Listing 0844b.

These spacers are 2.00" between stud centres.

If fitting to other racing carbs - please note, these spacers are approx 2.00" between stud centres.  Although not an expert on GP carbs - I think some of the larger bore Amal GP carbs were larger than this, therefore these spacers will not fit those carbs.

Note on Amal TT and RN carbs fitted to Norton SOHC models:  the flange spacers shown in these photographs are alongside an original Amal RN 'Longneck' carburettor - for comparison purposes only.  Norton SOHC models fitted with TT or RN carburettors were always supplied with the 'Long Neck' variety.  There was also a far more common 'short neck' version of both carb types, and this is often fitted to Norton SOHC models - as the long neck type are comparitively rare.  It is not uncommon for those that do not have a long neck available to fit a short neck type - but to get the original 'tuned length', it is advisable to fit an (approx) 1" thick spacer between carb and head.  I have done this myself on at least one Norton I have.  Sorry, but we cannot supply spacers of that diameter, but occasionally they can be found at autojumbles - or the long way is to buy a block of ally and machine/hacksaw yourself!

These 6mm thick tufnol type spacer flanges were a common fitment on many models fitted with Amal flange fitting carbs.  We also provide two smaller sizes.

This larger bore is 32mm - which equates to approximately 1 1/4" in imperial size.  I know these were a size used on later Vincent Black Lightning carbs and probably other sports/racing bikes in the 1950's-1960's

These spacers are 2.00" between stud centres.

These insulatings seals are 3mm thick and this item is for an internal bore of 26mm (approx 1"), to fit flange fitting Amal carbs.(i.e. 2.00" between studs).  These thick washers can seal as well as insulating the carb from excess engine heat..

Thicker than the paper type carb gasket we also sell (Item 0452/0453) - and less thick than the Tuffnol spacer rings we also offer, these 3mm thick gaskets/insulating seal's provide a gasket face for Amal flange fitting carbs (with 2.00" between stud centrres - which covers most Amal flange type carbs), but can also offer more heat insulation for the carburettor than the plain paper type washer.  These are manufactured by a high quality specialist UK gasket manufacturer .

These are 26mm bore - which is very similar to the normal 1.00" 16H sdievalve engine, and close to the 1 1/16" bore used on postwar Norton 500cc OHV models.  I am supposing this type of gasket/inuslating seal would be useful when running cast iron head/barrels that get very hot in summer months.

These are 22mm bore - which is a small bore (possibly smaller flange carbs fitted to many lightweight or 2 stroke models of the 1950's/60's), but this size also lends itself to being carefully trimmed with a sharp knife, to be opened out to whateve size your own carb inlet tract is - important if fitting to a racing motor with a specific size of Amal TT/RN/GP bore, that needs to be carefully blended.  Obviously - if taking this route. . . . follow all normal safefy practices!!

I am supposing this type of gasket/inuslating seal would be useful when running motors that get hot, allowing the carb better insulation from that heat - and therefore a denser fuel mixture

Alloy finned 'flange fitting' spacer of the type often fitted to sports or racing motorcycles (and Cafe racers) in the 1950's-1960's.  Fits those types of Amal carburettors with 2.0" stud distance flanges (i.e. TT/RN carbs, Monoblock, Concentric etc).

These are CNC machined and look nice quality.  They are 1" in depth, which makes them very similar in dimensions to the spacer that was sometimes fitted to SOHC Norton's by owners who were fitting a 'short neck' Amal TT or RN carb to their Norton, to replace the original fitment 'Long Neck' TT or RN carb, which are now much rarer to find. 

This type is 26mm Bore - but is useful if you wish to open it out further to fit a particular size of Amal TT or other similar type carb.

We also offer a similar spacer in 32mm bore size (Item 0945C) and can obtain some other sizes by special order - email us at sales@racingvincent.co.uk

Note: the accompanyning photographs show one of these spacers held up against an original Monoblock carburettor and also a genuine Norton 'Long Neck' type Amal RN racing carb - as these were what I had available at the time for the photo session.  However, if you already have a 'Long Neck' type TT or RN carb fitted - you should not require a spacer.
