4 part tickler kit to fit original Amal TT, RN and Type 276/289 (standard size) float chambers. This float tickler fits the standard screw in (Type 76) floatchamber top - and is CNC machined by us to the original tickler design and dimensions.

As can be seen from the photos, these tickler kits consist of the tickler pin, a small lock ring (which fits under the float chamber lid, a tickler spring and a split pin.  An original Amal tickler mechanism was used as the the template and dimensions of our items are identical.

Original ticklers on all Amal floatchambers were of this design from approximately the late 1920's through to the introduction of the Monoblock - and on well used carbs can be heavily worn, like the one shown in the photo here - and when worn often wobble about, or completely shear and drop out.

Our tickler pin and collar are CNC machined in brass, then satin nickel plated- as per the original design . . . and look very pretty.  We have also had the correct original spring design replicated, and the result is a float tickler that - once fitted -  gives a nice firm fit, and a very satisfying 'tickle' . . . i.e. not wobbling about like worn originals, and the correct spring ensures it is fully tensioned (unlike many original springs which have rusted or worn and lost their tension.

I have seen other 'tickler' kits availble in the past - but most use just a washer to secure the tickler pin to the top . . . ours use the correct stepped collar which holds firmly and evenly to the base of the floatchamber top - a small but important part of the design.

The accompanying photos shows the two most common Amal floatchamber top that these tickler assemblies were fitted to - the most common type being the cast pewter type, with'Amal' cast in, and the earlier pre-war chromed type . . . these tickler kits fit both types.

Note - we also manufacture a similar tickler set to fit the later (larger capacity) Amal RN/GP Type 302 float chamber, which has a longer tickler shaft - See Item 0174

4 part tickler kit to fit original Amal 302 Floatchambers - as fitted to Amal RN and GP carbs from the late 1940's through to the early 1960's.  This float tickler design is very similar to the type fitted to most Amal 276/289, TT, and RN floatchambers - but for this larger capacity racing Type 302 type floatchamber - a longer shaft was required, as the tops were quite different. As with the other type we supply to fit standard floatchambers (Item 0162), an original Amal Type 302 float tickler was used as a pattern, and our components match the originals exactly, and are CNC machined.

As can be seen from the photos, these tickler kits consist of the tickler pin, a small lock ring (which fits under the float chamber lid - and again is to the original design, a tickler spring and a split pin.  An original Type 302 Floatchamber tickler assembly was used as the pattern for our items, which are CNC manufactured in brass, then satin nickel platerd, as per originals.  This longer type of tickler design is now very hard to find and often missing or worn in original flaot chambers.

In case you are not sure if your floatchamber tickler is of this 302 type - the overall length of the tickler shaft is 32.4mm, while the standard tickler shaft (our item 0162) is 27.7mm

Note - we also manufacture a similar tickler set to fit standard design and size float chambers (i.e. Type 276/289, TT and early RN carbs), which has a shorter tickler shaft - See Item 0162

Spring to fit all Original Amal Float Tickler Assemblies - Each

Tickler spring to fit all Amal seperate floatchamber tickler assemblies.  A common fault with Amal tickler assemblies on Type 276/289 or competition Float chambers (i.e the floatchambers used on TT, RN, GP carbs) is that the original tickler spring either rusts and corrodes, or just compresses after many years of use.

We have had this spring imanufactured to the original dimensions, by our specialist UK spring maker,  and restores your tickler assembly to its original non-drooping position!.

Price is each

Note - It is not unusual for the whole original tickler assembly to get worn and tired.  We also manufacture a a complete aseembly manufactured just as per the original assembly - See Item 01`62.  The later Amal RN/GP Type 302 float chamber had a longer tickler shaft - we also sell that type of assembly as well - See Item 0174

Lock Screw to fit Floatchamber Top Cover on Amal Type 276/TT/RN Carb (Stainless Steel)

Product no.: 0163 14/021

- This lock screw is an exact copy of the type fitted tmost types of Amal floatchamber screw covers - i.e those floatchambers fitted to Type 276, TT, RN or Dirt Track Carburettors - in fact almost all Amal float chambers that have a screw in top.

This lock screw is CNC manufactured in stainless steel, with exactly the same distinctive profile curve to the head as the original (the hex flats are milled to the original dimensions, as this size of imperial hex is now difficult to obtain). Being stainless, as well as looking nice, it does not corrode - which the originals were prone to do.

Note on operation:  Although reasonably obvious, it is worth pointing out that the purpose of this lockscrew was to stop the screw in floatchamber top from vibrating loose in use.  The idea being that after screwing on the floatchamber top, this lockscrew was then fully tightened down and it just 'bit' into the top rim of the floatchamber to lock the top.

If you are removing the top of a floatchamber for the first time to replace this lockscrew or check the float - it is worth remembering this, and unscrew this lockscrew first slightly.  I know I have forgot to do this myself in the past! (as well as stripping) numerous carbs in the past where it was not fully screwed in and locked down.  When fully tightened down, just the bottom of the thread protrudes past the under lip of the floatchamber screw top, and the ring/lip on the lockscrew goes fully into the counterbore on the top of the floatchamber screw top

Body Base Plug Screw - To Fit Late TT/RN/GP Float Chamber (Stainless Steel)

This is the base plug as fitted to the bottom of (non-remote type) alloy floatchambers on Amal TT and RN carburettors.  CNC manufactured in stainless steel.  Comes with correct imperial red fibre washer

This distinctive shouldered base plug was of the type fitted to the Amal TT and RN (non-remote type) floatchambers from the late 1930's through to the end of Amal TT carb production.  It is worth noting the very early Amal TT non-remote floatchamber (i.e. early - to mid 1930s) was fitted with a different (non-shouldered) base plug, which we also sell - Item 0848, so if you are not sure what type yours is - check the photographs in this and the 0848 item listing.

The purpose of this base plug was to allow for the cross-drilling of the petrol delivery from float chamber to carb in manufacture - therefore as this is to fit a racing carburettor - its thread diameter is larger than the early TT and Amal 276 type base plug's, as the petrol bore hole is a larger diameter than other float chamber types.  Note, we also sell the road going Amal 276 type base plug - Item 0847.

Unlike the other two floatchamber base plug types, this version was originally manufactured with a lip, to ensure a good seat on the floatchamber casting - this item is an exact copy, an original base plug having being used as a pattern.  It is CNC machined in stainless steel, with the hex being milled as per original imperial hex dimension.  It comes complete with correct dimension imperial red fibre washer, which sits flush with the shoulder.

Final point - although only a small component, these base plugs appear in a very visible position close to the timing side of most engines, and originals are nearly always corroded or chewed (they rarely need to be removed, and are normally locked up if you try to take them out).  Therefore, I have found replacing the original corroded item with this very pretty version can make a bigger cosmetic difference than would have been expected

Body Base Plug Screw - To Fit Type 276 and (and Early TT?) Float Chamber (Stainless Steel)

Product no.: 0847 13/153

In stock

£6.80
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the base plug as fitted to the bottom of floatchambers on standard roadgoing Amal 276/289 type carburettors - it may also have been fitted to other Amal model types using seperate floatchambers - see detail listing for more background.  CNC manufactured in stainless steel.  Comes with correct imperial red fibre washer.

This version is CNC manufactured using an original 276 base plug as a pattern, and includes the distinctive curved head and imperial hex the original had (and as imperial hex is now difficult to obtain - this version has milled flats from round bar).

If you are not sure if your floatchamber is originally for a 276/289 roadgoing carb, or a TT type - the 276/289 floatchamber normally had 'AMAL' cast into the floatchamber body - and were of a grey pewter alloy material, while the TT floatchambers (that I have seen) did not have any words cast in the body and were normally of alloy material

This particular style of base plug was fitted to most roadgoing Amal Type 276 or 289 floatchambers - as used on most Norton OHV, SV and CS1 models from the 1930's through to the introduction of the Amal Monoblock in the mid 1950's. The screw also looks visibly identical to the base plug fitted to early Amal TT Floatchambers - however, the thread diameter on this plug screw is 1/4", while the example of the early TT floatchamber I have in my possesion is 7/32", i.e. it will measure approximately 0.206" in diameter.  Amal's may have made an early TT floatchamber of this type with 1/4" thread, but I have not seen one.  Therefore if you have an early TT floatchamber you should check the thread diameter first - we sell the 7/32" version (Item 0848) as well, but if you do have a floatchamber with approx 1/4" (as per accompanying phtograph with digital caliper), then this is the correct item.

Final point - although only a small component, these base plugs appear in a very visible position close to the timing side of most engines, and originals are nearly always corroded or chewed (they rarely need to be removed, and are normally locked up if you try to take them out).  Therefore, I have found replacing the original corroded item with this very pretty version can make a bigger cosmetic difference than would have been expected.  I dont have a bike of my own fitted with a 276 carb, but I have included a picture of a SOHC engine with an early TT carb fitted with the same base plug head that shows this

Body Base Plug Screw - To Fit Type Early TT/RN Float Chamber (Stainless Steel)

This is the base plug as fitted to the bottom of floatchambers on early type (early to mid 1930's?) Amal TT Floatchambers - it may also have been fitted to other Amal model types using seperate floatchambers - see detail listing for more background.  CNC manufactured in stainless steel.  Comes with correct imperial red fibre washer.

This version is CNC manufactured using an original early TT 15 degree (i.e. 1930's Norton International) floatchamber base plug as a pattern, and includes the distinctive curved head and imperial hex the original had (and as imperial hex is now difficult to obtain - this version has milled flats from round bar).

If you are not sure if your floatchamber is originally for a 276/289 roadgoing carb, or a TT type - the 276/289 floatchamber normally had 'AMAL' cast into the floatchamber body - and were of a grey pewter alloy material, while the TT floatchambers (that I have seen) did not have any words cast in the body and were normally of alloy material - see the photograph in this listing

This particular style of base plug looks visibly identical to the type fitted to most roadgoing Amal Type 276 or 289 floatchambers - but its identifying feature is that the thread diameter on this plug screw is 7/32" - i.e. if you measure the diameter of the thread with a digital caliper, it will be somewhere around 0.205", as in the accompanying photograph.   The more common Amal 276/289 floatchamber looks the same, but the thread diameter on that floatchamber is bigger - 1/4".

I have to say - when I came to check this Amal TT base plug screw I was suprised to find it was different to the 276 type - particularly as it is a smaller bore than the 276 type, I would have expected it to be the other way round with a competition carburettor - but there were many different sub-models made over the years - i.e. TT27, TT34, TT38 (number signifying year change) - so please check your screw before ordering - if you have a larger diameter thread, then we also provide item 0847 with a 1/4" OD thread and the later TT type lipped nut with 5/16" thread - item 0846

Final photograph is of a 1930's TT carb fitted to my 1937 Norton Inter with the screw fitted

This very rare item is a reproduction of the early TT bellmouth fitted to those early brass TT carburettors, where the carb body has a male thread. The item is chromed as per the original and very nicely made. Note - internal diameter at the point where the thread is reads 1.780" approx, using a digital vernier gauge

Update Jan 2016: Unfortunately we have now sold the last one of these and our supplier does not intend to make any more, which is a real shame.  I have kept one back for myself - please email me if you need dimensions .. . or if enough interest I may consider making them in the future myself

Brass Choke Tube to fit Original Amal TT Carburettors (Within alloy choke body) - Each

Product no.: 0295 3438

If you are thinking of boring out your Amal TT to a new choke diameter - i.e taking a 1 1/16" bore out to 1 5/32", then you will first need to remove the Choke Tube. We can supply this little but important item in case yours gets damaged or has already been damaged - as they should protrude slightly from the bottom of the choke body, up into the air flow.

Amal TT and RN racing carburettors have always been less common to find than normal road carbs, and the outer choke tube was normally stamped with the choke size (i.e. the diameter of the inlet tract), which should also correspond to the size quoted for your given model of engine.  Amal 10TT/RN were originally supplied in a variety of bore sizes from 1 1/8" to 1 3/16" (and a few were made for the Works factory teams at 1 1/4" I gather, as well as specials for Vincent Black Lightnings and similar).  Below that 15TT carbs were made with a smaller throttle slide, that allowed up to 1 1/16" choke.  As can be expected - some sizes are more sought now than others - particulalarly the larger sizes, which were often fitted to 500cc Norton SOHC and DOHC engines.  It is possible to bore out the body of a TT carb to these larger sizes, but often this requires also boring the central alloy choke that is bolted into the carb body (that the throttle slide fits over) - but to do this requires removing the small brass choke tube that is threaded into the alloy body - and are very easy to damage on removal (and often stuck fast).

I do not profess to be an expert on doing this - but I have done it a few times and I know the secret to removing an old one is to make a small tubular adaptor with a screw head, and a hole through it centre for a 2" x 1/4" bolt. You then put the bolt through the adaptor and the the old choke tube (which will be in situ in the old mixing chamber) and tighten it up. Put the mixing chamber in the oven until spit hot (to loosen off the old choke tube) then unscrew the adaptor and hopefully the old choke tube will budge. The small bolt ensures the screw head is kept tight against the choke tube. However, invariably this can get chewed, in which case having a new one is handy!

See photographs for my own adaptor for doing this.
