This is the Large dished Washer that was used on the bottom of all road going  SOHC, OHV and SV petrol tanks to hold captive the rubber washer (our Item 0129) that fitted under the frame tank bracket and protected the tank from vibration. The special Norton shouldered tank bolt (our Item 0124) then fed through this lipped washer and rubber, and through the tank mount and lipped washer (our Item 0128), to screw into the thread that was used on almost all Norton petrol tanks from the 1920's through to the late 1950's (although not Featherbed models, which used a different fixing strap)

Four were Fitted per petrol tank - if a normal type road or pre-bolthru racing tank, all of which would use this dished washer in conjunction with the 0124 type of fixing bolt.  However, the same washers were all used on the upper 'Top Hat' rubbers on Manx Bolt- thru petrol tanks, and were also used on the 1950 oil tank upper Top Hat rubbers.

Finally, in conjunction with the special lockwired tank bolts (which our item 0124 bolts are - allowing for them to be lockwired for security), they were also used for the under tank to frame mounting of most wrapround racing Oil tanks, pre 1950.

Our dished washers are as per the original Norton dimensions, but CNC manufactured in stainless steel - so are als0 very pretty and durable, they are one of most popular sellers.

Inter/ES2 Petrol Tank Bolt - Drilled for Lockwire

Product no.: 0124 A2/277

In stock

£8.50
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This distinctive bolt is used to retain the petrol tank on all models of Norton petrol tank from the 1930's - 1950's (excluding bolthru Manx) - they are CNC manufactured in Stainless Steel to the dimensions as the original Norton petrol tank bolt one of which was used as the pattern.  Price is each

They are used in conjunction with the dished washer (Item 0123) and upper/lower tank rubbers  (Items 0128/0129) to locate the petrol tank to the frame lugs.  The upper rubber is  of 'top hat' profile and sits on top of the frame lugs isolating the tank from the lugs, then this bolt with dished washer and lower rubber in situ is fed up through the lug and screws into the petrol tank from below.

It is important to remember that all Norton petrol tanks (except for Manx bolthru tanks and Featherbed models, both having their own fixings) had this fixing system and used a coarse Whit profile thread.  When fitting these bolts with rubbers fitted the bolt should be tightened until the shoulder of the bolt locks to the petrol tank - they are then less likely to work loose and vibrate off in use.  This is a very common issue with this design and it is not unusual to see the thread of the petrol tank has lost its thread or the bolt thread is stretched, as a consequence of the bolt not been screwed fully up to the tank, where the shoulder locks it in place.

As a final point of design - to help aid these bolts not unwinding in use (as they so often do, particularly given that many Norton singles do vibrate)  we have had these bolts drilled for lockwire - we would advise you do this, lockwiring them either to the frame or each other . . . they are very pretty, so it would be a shame to lose them!  (note - I cannot confirm but believe Norton themselves may have done this for the similar E6745 - the similar bolts fitted to some Gardengate Manx oil tankx bolts - as their 1948 spare parts catalog seems to indicate this)

Final note - As well as being used on Norton SOHC models, these bolts were also used on OHV and SV machines, as well as pre-featherbed Dominator machines

Norton Petrol Tank Lipped Bottom Rubber - All Pre-Featherbed Road Models & Pre Bolthru Manx (Each)

Product no.: 0128 A2/276

In stock

£3.80
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Lipped bottom tank rubber used between frame bracket and petrol tank (Sometimes this rubber has a packing Washer above it) - Four required per petrol tank. As used on most Norton single SOHC, OHV and Sidevalve petrol tanks (Pre-Featherbed).

Price is per each.

These 'lipped' type rubbers have a smaller diameter portion in the centre, that fits in the petrol tank casting element of Norton frames, with the wider portion sitting above - between the petrol tank and frame casting.  Then a corresponding plain 'doughnut' (Item 0129) rubber fits into a steel cup (Item 0123) under the frame casting, with a petrol tank bolt (Item 0124) fitting through all - up into the petrol tank. When the bolts are tightened, the rubbers squeeze and stop the tank from vibrating and helps stop splitting.

These rubbers are manufactured specially for RacingNorton and are made from high quality fuel/oil resistent firm rubber, which will not easily break up or soften (which is how most original and pattern ones go eventually).

Note: although Dominator models are not our speciality - we believe these same rubbers were also used on non-Featherbed framed twin Norton's - i.e. Plunger Dominator's.

We also sell a wide packing washer - Item 0126, which is often shown in Norton Spare Parts Catalogs as sitting above the lipped washer - i.e. between the petrol tank and lipped washer - its purpose being to help ensure the rubber does not get mushed out against the petrol tank bolt mount (this is part 23 in the accompanyning exploded picture, taken from the 1948 Spare Parts List).  However, in the past I have found that some petrol tanks have mounts wide enough not to require this washer fitting - and actually it can make the petrol tank bolt (our Item 0124 - which is copied from an origianl Norton item) difficult to fit.  If not sure - I can only recommend buying a set of the packing washers anyway - and see if you can fit them in - for some tanks it helps.  What is important is that the bolt is tightened up so that its shoulder fully locks against the bottom of the petrol tank - it is this that stops the bolt unwinding from vibration in use - a very common problem with this design of Norton petrol tanks

Norton Petrol Tank Cup Bottom Rubber (and some oil Tank): All Models - See Listing Notes (Each)

Product no.: 0129 A2/278

In stock

£3.30
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

These are the flat bottom tank rubbers that were fitted between the lower dished washer and the frame tank bracket,  on most single cylinder (i.e Pre Featherbed - Rigid Frames, Plunger Frame and Swinging Arm) non-Featherbed frame models - of all Model types.  They are of the type used with our Petrol tank bottom bolts - Item 0124.

Normally four of these rubbers are required per petrol tank, along with four dished washer cups (our Item 0123), and in the accompanying pictures is an exploded diagram taken from the 1948 Norton Spare Parts Catalog that shows the parts that are required - and they are a nice snug fit in the dished washers.  These washers (with cups fitted) fit under the frame petrol tank lugs and are held in place by the lipped bolt (Item 0124).

They were also used on some oil tank lower mount brackets - if using a similar bolt to Item 0124.

Note we also sell an almost identical rubber to these - Item 0130.  The only difference between the two rubbers is that these rubbers have an internal bore most suited to a 3/8" type bolt going through them.  The similar oil tank rubbers (Item 0130) have a slightly smaller hole ID - more suited to 5/16" bolts - as were more commonly fitted to oil tanks and some bolthru Manx tanks.

However - although we manufacture both types, if either are out of stock . . . the other type can still be used as a suitable substitute - and both are a snug fit in our petrol/oil tank dished washers - Item 0123.

These are manufactured for us by a speclialist rubber manufacturer from  a firm oil resistent nitrile rubber and are modelled on the original Norton rubber.   They are high quality (and one of our most popular items).

Norton Oil Tank (and Manx Bolt-Thru Oil Tank Cup) Bottom Rubber - See Listing (Each)

Product no.: 0130 A2/278M

In stock

£3.30
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

Flat bottom tank rubber - normally fitted to the bottom of oil tanks - or occasionally Manx bolthru tanks.  The same as petrol tank rubber Item - 0129, but with a fractionally smaller Internal diameter, more suited to 5/16" bolts.  See listing for more detail.

Price is per each

Similar in appearance to the petrol tank rubber doughnuts (Item 0129), these oil tank rubbers have slightly different inner diameters - these being closer to 5/16" diameter, and were normally fitted to the bottom of oil tanks where a 5/16" shouldered bolt is used (while our petrol tank version of the same rubber - Item 0129 is more suited to the normal 3/8" diameter shouldered petrol bolt.

These were also used on Manx petrol tanks and oil tanks using 5/16" thru rods - and like Item 0129, they fit snugly in the dished washers we also sell in the same section.

Note: the difference between these and our Item 0129 is actually quite minimal . . . but we ended up making both types.  If one is out of stock, the other can also be interchanged with no issue.

Just like Item 0129, these are manufactured for us by a specialist rubber manufacturer and are patterned on original Norton items from high quality oil resistent nitrile rubber

Manx Bolt-thru Petrol Tank - 5/16" BSC Domed Nuts: Stainless Steel Polished

Product no.: 0125 A11M/837(N)

In stock

£3.70
Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

- This is the domed nut used on the top of Norton Manx Plunger petrol tanks - these look beautiful lightly polished when used in conjunction with my stainless dished washer. Price is per each

These domed nuts are patterned on the 5/16" BSC domed nuts used on Bolt-Thru Manx petrol tanks, but are also excellent for the top brackets of Inter Oil tanks - also a visible spot, or actually, anywhere where semi decorative domed cycle nut is required

Manufactured in stainless steel - Employs 5/16" B.S.Cycle thread, so can be used for other purposes if desired.  Particularly, they are handy to use on oil tank bolts, handlebar threads (if using 5/16" cycle threads) and 5/16 BSC chassis and mudguard bolts where the nut is showing

We polish the head of each domed nut (but be aware, although we clean before sending - they can occasionally have a residue bit of black buffing compound on them - just wipe off with a clean rag)

Norton International Petrol Tank Platform Packing Washer - Road Models (Each)

This is the Large pan Washer used between the top rubber and the petrol tank on Norton Internationals and Norton pushrod/Sidevalve models. Four Fitted per petrol tank.

Price is per each

This item is listed in the 1948 Norton Spare Parts List, and is shown fitted to both International and other OHV/SV models, as being fitted between the petrol tank and the lipped washer (our Item 0128, as shown in the photo).

The washer is certainly very useful for ensuring the rubber does not 'mush out' against the base of the petrol tank . . . but I have found on some petrol tank fittings it is difficult to insert this washer because adding this meant it was difficult for the special Norton petrol tank bolt (our Item 0124 - which are always a standard size) to reach the thread under the petrol tank.  Therefore I would question if this washer was fitted to all single cylinder petrol tanks - and certainly it is very common to find it has been omitted.  I notice that some petrol tank threads seem flush with the mount, and some are slightly recessed - I can only suggest you try . . . and if you can fit them, and the rubbers do not look over compressed - then it is a good idea to use them.

Bolthru Manx/Racing International 'Top Hat' Type Petrol Tank Top Rubber + 1950 Oil Tank (Each)

Product no.: 0131 A11M/840

Recommended Retail Price, plus delivery

This is the distinctive Top Hat shaped rubber used on the top of Manx and Racing International Bolt-thru petrol tanks - Its head is the correct diameter to fit within the dished washer (A2/277 - our Item 0123). Four required per petrol tank - Price is per each.

Price is each

Norton introduced the 'Bolt Thru' style of Manx Norton petrol tank for the postwar racing models (i.e. 46-47), as well as some Clubmans tanks, although they may have experimented with them just pre-War as well, and Works bike used this method of securing the tank.  The petrol tanks had tubes running all the way vertically through them, and then recesses at the top to hold 4 of these smaller Top Hat rubbers and holes under the tank to push in four of the larger Top Hat type rubbers (our Item 0132).

Through the centre then ran 5/16" steel rods - threaded at both ends, and with chamfered ends, with acorn nuts at the top (our Item 0125) and two 5/16" nuts under the frame tank supports which could be adjusted until the right tension was obtained, then locked together.

Lipped washers (our Item 0123) are then used both at the top of the tank (they slide over the smaller Top Hat rubbers) and underneath the tank bracket to support the whole assembly.

We have had the moulds made for these bottom rubbers, copied from original Norton items and they are made for us by a specialist rubber manufacturer from high quality oil resistent nitrile rubber of just the right density.

As well as fitting in the tanks nicely - our stainless steel lipped washers fit over these washers lovely, and when used in conjunction with our stainless steel acorn nuts - they really look the business, and finish off any Manx Norton petrol tank restoration.  In the photo is a picture of these fitted to one of my own original Manx Norton bolt thru tanks - in this case a scolloped/soldered Manx tank, fitted to my 1938 Big Plunger Manx.

1950 Manx Norton alloy oil tank and Beart Oil tanks:  This same (smaller) top hat rubber was also used on the alloy wrapround oil tank fitted to Manx Norton's in 1949-50.  The assembly and fitting was similar to the Manx petrol tank - except this small type top hat rubber was used both top and bottom, therefore 4 rubbers were used in total.  Although not shown in the photos, I have one of those oil tanks and it still has the perished remains of this type of rubber in situ!  Additionally - Francis Beart also offered an alloy oil tank in very small numbers (see photograph of the one I have fitted to my 1938 Manx), and these rubbers also fit that tank, as per the 1950 Norton version.

Bolthru Manx/Racing International 'Top Hat' Type Petrol Tank - Bottom Rubber (Each)

Product no.: 0132 A11M/841

This is the Top hat shaped rubber used on the bottom of Manx and Racing International Bolt-thru petrol tanks - With a larger diameter head than A11M/840 (Item 0131), It fits at the bottom of the tank and locates in the recess on the alloy Manx brackets used on Plunger Manx frames.

Price is each

Norton introduced the 'Bolt Thru' style of Manx Norton petrol tank for the postwar racing models (i.e. 46-47), as well as some Clubmans tanks, although they may have experimented with them just pre-War as well, and Works bike used this method of securing the tank.  The petrol tanks had tubes running all the way vertically through them, and then recesses at the top to hold 4 smaller Top Hat rubbers (our Item 0131) and holes under the tank to push in four of these larger Top Hat type rubbers.

Fitting Notes:  These bottom rubbers have a nice wide bottom area that sits nicely on the recess of the Manx Norton frame tank brackets (alloy in the case of the front bracket).  However, if you wish to raise the height of your petrol tank slightly (as sometimes there are clearance issues it is also possible to fit a normal road type 'lipped' washer (Our Item 0128) in the recess of the frame tank support, with the large Top Hat Rubbers then sat on them .

Final point - some observant people will notice that the 1948 Norton Spare Parts list shows that the lowest rubber - that fits under the tank support is lipped, but small enough to fit into the 0128 lipped washer.  Sorry - we do not sell these small lipped type - and have found that the normal washer (Item 0129) is satisfactory (as ours is of the correct size and density) - and its only purpose was to keep the centre rod centralised and avoiding it touching the tank bracket.  Therefore, if using an extra lipped washer, this will occur anyway - and if not - it is a simple task to take a piece of fuel line and cuts it to approx 5mm length and feed it into the recess in the tank bracket to achieve the same purpose - if this makes sense!

Shown in the photo are two genuine Manx petrol tanks - a steel scolloped/soldered tank (the first bolt-thru type offered, and the later alloy petrol tank - fitted in 1949/50.  There was also an interim type - similar to the scolloped type, but of welded construction, in approximately 1948-49.  All three types use the rubbers shown here.
