This listing is for a modern reproduction of the distinctive RU7 type 'T-Shaped' battery case, as fitted to many Norton roadgoing models in the 1930's and 1940's. This black plastic shell is an excellent reproduction of the original RU7 battery shell, and is hollow inside to accept a modern gell type 6 volt battery. It is manufactured in durable black plastic and includes the original design lid (but note - does not include the original style lid clips or mounting bolts - which you will need to find seperately).
Price is each (i.e. main battery box and lid)
Dimensions of the space Inside the battery box (i.e. for fitting a modern battery) are:
Width = 108mm x Depth = 82mm x Height x 137mm (this height is the top of the main box, the lid has an additional depth of 16mm).
In the accompanyning photograpshs - you will see a picture of a Norton International fitted with this distinctive 'T-Shaped' battery, as well as a line picture taken from the 1948 Spare Parts Catalog (see our Facsimile section, where we sell this as well as other Norton spare parts list) - which shows the distinctive shape of the Norton battery carrier design that fitted this type of battery.
This type of battery was originally made from a dense black rubber material, with a Lead Acid 6V battery moulded into it. However - as Lead Acid batteries do not have a long life span, and this battery type has not been manufactured for very many years - it is almost certain that you would not be able to find an original operational battery.
In most cases - if your motorcycle had originally been fitted with this type of T-Shaped battery - there is a good chance that the battery carrier has subsequently been replaced (or modified) to accept the later rectangular battery - but if you are still fortunate enough to have the original T-Shaped carrier fitted .. . then this reproduction battery case has all the original design moulded into it - and is hollow inside, to allow the fitting of a modern 6v (or 12v if you have converted that as well) solid gell battery.
We also sell a rubber battery mat (item 0435) - which would originally have been fitted under the rectangular shape battery's to help prevent cracking through vibration - but is a good idea to fit inside the plastic battery box, before fitting the modern gel battery.
Fitting Instructions - Please note:-
This plastic battery box will need to be drilled with two holes on the lower part of the horizontal 'T', to fit two vertical bolts (and suitable wahers) to mount it onto the orignal Norton (or other marque) battery carrier - but this is a simple operation. We recommend you use steel pan washers between the battery carrier and bottom of the case - to help avoid splitting of the case through vibration in use (see our petrol tank section for suitable pan washers).
Also - as manufactured, these reproduction battery boxes do not have a means to secure the lid to the main box. Originally - the battery would have had a 1" wide flat spring steel spring clipped on either side - and the battery box is moulded with the indents for these spring clips to be fitted . . . but they do not come supplied with the box. FYI - as at Septemeber 2024 I am investigating having suitable clips manufactured by my spring maker - email at paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk for more information. However, as an interim - either a rubber band on either side (i.e. from an old black inner tube), or plastic tie clips - or similar will easily secure the lid.
Battery Alternatives for 1930's to 1950's Rigid and Plunger Norton Models:
Because of the rarity of this type of battery (which has probably not been manufactured in @70 years!) - even if you have a bike fitted with the correct 'T-shaped' Norton battery carrier, you may decide to instead fit a more easily available rectangular battery - which was also fitted to some Norton models in the 1930''s to early 1950's.
If so - we can also supply that rectangular battery type carrier to fit rigid/plunger OHV/SV models (see Item 1027), and also the original rectangular battery case style plastic battyer box for that type (Item 577) - all from our Electrical section of the online catalog.
