This item listing is for a kickstart spring cover of the type that were commonly fitted to  late 1920's Sturmey Archer gearbox's, with a kickstart shaft of 1.00" diameter.  This cover was of a type fitted commonly to Sturmey Archer 3 speed gearobx's (as fitted to Norton CS1/ES2  models late 1920's - early 1930's. This particularl type has a hole on its outer lip - to allow for an external kickstart spring tang.  These are machined from solid billet.

Price is each.

This particularl type has a hole on its outer lip - to allow for an external kickstart spring tang, as well as a central hole for the 1" diameter kickstarter shaft - and as you can see from a catalog picture  from the CS1/ES2 Norton Spare Parts List from 1928-29- is of the type fitted to the 3 speed gearbox fitted to those models at that time.

It may also fit other gearbox types of that era and for other marques.  Email us on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk if you require more details of dimensions.

We also offer a similar cover without the hole - Item 1248 (which was likely to be fitted to the later type with an internal spring tang).  But we know this 1.00" hole type was also made for the kickstarter spring with a long external tang (which acted against the kickstart shaft) - because we used an original original Sturmey Archer cover as the pattern to replicate this version (see accompanyning photos) - and that has the original hole in it.

More Background Information:

We have copied this cover from an original Sturmey Archer kickstart spring cover - and that can be seen in the photographs.  We have copied the dimensions from that.  Becasue there were (seemingly) so many variations of Sturmey Archer gearbox's - fitted to many makes, as well as Norton's, if not entirely sure - we would recommend you email us on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk and we can confirm dimensions - particularly the interal diameter of the main body (that would normally slide over a lip on the gearbox cover) and the depth.

If you look in the same section as this spring cover listing - you will also see that we sell a variety of Sturmey Archer kickstart springs - and the external tang types were of the type commonly fitted with this type of spring cover.  However, because of the number of small Sturmey Archer gearbox variations in that period - please email me on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk if you wish to check dimensions - particularly the inner bore diameter of the cover, and the depth . . . which may vary on other Sturmey Archer gearbox's.

It looks to be a fiddly job to fit the springs through the hole - and may require you having to oper the end of the spring before getting it to feed through - so we would recommend not painting the cover until the spring is fitted!  However both springs and covers are copied from originals.

This cover is noticeably different to the other Sturmey kickstart cover we offer (Item 1246 and 1247) in that its centre hole is made for a 1.00" diameter kickstart shaft - as shown in one of the accompanyning photographs, while on the other (CS type?) Sturmey gearbox they used a 0.625" shaft.

These kickstart spring covers are now extremely rare to find - and normally heavily dented and damaged.  We have only made a small batch of these, but because of the prohibitive cost of having press tooling made (we have been quoted @£2k) . . .instead, we have had small batch's machined from solid billet/bar.  Because of this, hope you will understand why they are not as cheap as a mass produced item.
