Additional Information For Cable Fittings:

For the outer cables fitting - i.e. the chrome ferrules that are used on each end of the sheathing: - measure the outer cable sheathing of the cable you are making up - and choose the ferrule with the internal diameter as close to the sheathing diameter as possible.  Ensure the ferrule outer diameter will fit inside whatever lever/fitting you intend to use.  Unless you have a special crimping tool - the normal method I learnt many years ago (when making up cables seemed more commonplace) - was to place the ferrule over the outer cable - once you had cut it to size, and then use a sharp centre punch placed in the middle of the ferrule - one sharp punch should ensure the ferrule stays in place, but try not to punch so hard it distorts the ferrule.  As an additional tip - if shortening the outer cable, ensure that before fitting the outer ferrule, that you remove any burrs to the inner part of the outer cable (particularly if using a cutting disc in an angle grinder, as I do these days) - to check this, run an inner cable through the outer cable after cutting to length, but before placing the ferrule over it - it should move freely without touching the (cut) outer cable

Also, if making up cables for yourself for the first time - remember to 'tin' the cable before cutting or grinding it (to help prevent the cable strands splaying), and use plumbers solder rather than electrical solder, as well as a good quality soldering flux.  and FYI - do not put any oil on the inner cable where you are intending to solder - they almost never 'tin' once impregnated wtih oil.
