Commercial quality ThreeBond silicone gasket mateial, Type 1215 - 250g Tube and applicator - in Grey colour.

I have been using this high quality silicone sealer for gasket application for about 20 years - and in my opnion there is no finer silicone gasket material available.

I was first put on to this specialist gasket silicone sealer about 20 years ago by someone in the motorcycle trade.  I had asked what brand of silicone gasket material the main Japanese motorcycle dealers used?, and was told by that person - the main dealer they knew (one of the Big 4 Japanese motorcycle makes) used this brand.  Although never easy to source (you wont find it for sale in your local Motor Factor!), and slightly more expensive than other main brands - I have found this type of silicone sealer to be far superior to any other - it has fantastic adhesive quality, dries flexible, and really helps to prevent leaks on marginal mating faces - as we often see with old British Motorcycle engines.

The Type 1215 variety shown here is grey in colour when applied - which makes it very suitable for most British bikes where aluminium castings are most common.  Applied in thin measures directly from the tube (avoiding oilways - always, with any silicone gasket material!), once the two mating surfaces are joined together, any excess that has seeped out can be easily wiped away before it dries.

Although we sell lots of specialist Norton gaskets - I confess that more often than not I use silicone sealant on the majority of my motorcycle builds - a good example being Norton outer timing covers (where the mag chain fits), timing covers and rocker covers of Norton OHV and SV engines, and most recently - the timing cover and gearbox halfs of my 1919 Douglas build. Not to menition a whole raft of other motorcycle areas, where additional silicone sealer often helps supplementing seals - pushrod tubes or chaincases being good examples.

And as it says on the box - can be used to replace the need for solid (i.e. paper) gaskets, but can also be used to supplement them.  I often use this on one side of a paper gasket on the cylinder base to crankcase surface, or between compression plates (being careful not to get it near any oilways).

It describes a heat range of between -60C to +250C.

This ThreeBond 1215 (grey finish type) comes in a 250g tube - which is a suprisingly large tube, and should last most restorers a good period of time!  But as with all silicone sealants - try and keep the original screw-on cap on when not in use - to help prevent it from drying out (I have had my last tube for about 8 years like this . . . see picture).

Price is Per 250g Tube.  Each tube comes with plastic applicator nozzle.

ThreeBond 1207B - Black Sealant in 100g tubes.  Small Stock/Special Order

We also stock a small quantity of an alternative ThreeBond silicone sealant - this being their Type 1207B, which is most noticeable because it is provided in a Black finish.  I bought a tube of this variety a few years ago - and found it quite useful when working on Norton Chromated (i.e. black finished magnesium) covers, as fitted to M30/M40/Manx models - because the sealant colour was similar to the black finish of our Norton racing engines - and looked less conspicuous if not fully wiped away!  Unfortunately this variety is special order from the parent company in Japan - and is more expensive because of this, and only available in a 100g tube (still a reasonable size - see photo).  We normally keep a couple of tubes of this variety in stock as well - but email first on paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk before ordering - to confirm availability and price.  As at 2024 expect this variety to be approximately £5.50 more expensive than the 1215 (Grey) variety.  I notice this type comes with a seperate small steel applicator, as well as the adjustable plastic tube applicator.
